Software engineer, leftist, nerd, ADHD, probably a little autistic. I like books, games, films, stuff.

I'm a Samus main in SSBU.

I'm posting a lot of stuff about Star Trek at the moment.

#StarTrekTOS first watch notes: The Lights of Zetar

This was another sub-par episode. It had very few interesting ideas, and I had to sit through Scotty's condescending way of talking to Mira. There's a bit of a plot hole too: how do they know that pressure will do anything to the Zetarians? It comes out of nowhere.

I liked the cinematography, with the zooms into Mira's eyes to show how she was being affected. It was also cool to see the origin of Memory Alpha.

TOS thoughts: Space Seed

Well, here it is: the origin of Khan! I've heard much about him.

I'm surprised, I didn't like this episode as much as I expected. The handling of McGiver in particular made me uncomfortable.

Kirk's decision at the end was a surprise too. I can't help but feel that Trek's values are undermined by it. Khan is a fascist, and instead of rehabilitation he's basically enabled

It's given me a lot to think about though, so I see why it's so enduring!

IT'S NO ACCIDENT THAT:

You learned about Helen Keller instead of W.E.B. DuBois

You learned about the Watts and L.A. Riots, but not Tulsa or Wilmington.

You learned that George Washington's dentures were made from wood, rather than the teeth from slaves.

You learned about black ghettos, but not about Black Wall Street.

You learned about the New Deal, but not "red lining."

Just finished The Lost Cause by @pluralistic. I absolutely adored it, and can't recommend it enough. In the face of the full climate crisis 30 years from now, it's full of hope and people just getting on with the hard work, and it made me cry in the best way several times.

I'm reading @pluralistic's new book The Lost Cause, and among the things I'm loving about it is the future slang. For example, we definitely need to start referring to the 1% as plutes (short for plutocrats).

Friends, help me out with some wordsmithing?

I want to describe a situation where one side in a fight is put at an extreme disadvantage before the fight even begins.

How would you describe the act of putting one side at a severe disadvantage? The state of the disadvantaged party thereafter?

I don't want to use "handicap" or "handicapped." What are some good alternatives?

not_gagarin,

@design_law
Kneecapped? If you've been kneecapped, someone did it to you, so it I think it avoids ableist language.

not_gagarin,

@Bam
I think this could work, actually. A hobble is something you place around a horses legs to limit its movement. Other connotations come from that I think.
@design_law

not_gagarin,

@design_law
The suggestion from @Bam of "hobbled" sounds good for this. They had their legs tied together while they weren't looking, and now their fighting back at a disadvantage.

Or for something more silly, getting your shoelaces tied together.

You know, sometimes I wish the Democrats were as good as the Republicans at mobilising their supporters to effect change. Because this seems like a great tactic for getting someone into power!

What's more correct:

A) She was choosing what band's t-shirt to wear.
B) She was choosing what band t-shirt to wear.

not_gagarin,

@ZachWeinersmith
In A, she's choosing between bands, and then picking that band's T-shirt. In B, she's choosing between cool looking t-shirts that all happen to come from bands.

Just finished The Internet Con by @pluralistic. It was an excellent read. Horrifying to learn of the many ways big tech works to screw us over, but it also inspired confidence that things can change.

I just wish there was more I could do to help! I feel kind of powerless when the battle seems to be a legal one, and I'm no lawyer.

My #cat has been sick lately and they can’t quite pinpoint what’s going on.

I know, she’s 17 1/2… but I’ll never be ready for ‘that day’.

It’s been expensive, very expensive, but she’s worth it. She’s stable - just some lab work and symptoms that are unusual.

She’s been my little everything my entire adult life. We have a special bond.

We’re going to the vet again tomorrow for more tests — could you please keep my lil Mac in your thoughts? She’s the bestest baby.

Thanks 💜

There's a lot of things that suck about SpaceX and the world in general at the moment, but I love this headline. It feels a little sci-fi in its casual mention of people blasting off into space, and almost utopian in the way it represents nations working together.

This has mostly been reported as "trans women banned from women's chess" but it's much more sinister. (as if it weren't already.)

ALL trans people are targeted by this ruling. Trans men will be stripped of all chess titles won, which can only be returned to them by “changing the gender back to a woman” (from the ICF’s ruling). ALL transgender chess players will be marked as trans in their files.

If you play or know anyone who does take a stand on this. It's ugly.

My younger sister remembers that when we were kids we would play chess together, until one day she got good enough to start beating me, at which point I no longer wanted to play chess. Society gets you started early it seems 🤦‍♂ It's also telling that she remembers this when I don't.
