The freedom to be able to walk and shop in places without worrying about a shooting is something Malaysians take for granted. I cannot imagine living with that kind of possibility in my life. You know what else we take for granted? The fact that Malaysia is free of most natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanoes and such.

mackaj,
@mackaj@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@liztai

Ditto in the UK. Don't have to worry about guns as almost no-one in the general population owns one.

Closest I've come to an earthquake was something that felt like a lorry driving past the house and we hardly ever get twisters.

Yellow Magic Orchestra is the essential electronic band!

Everyone talks about Kraftwerk as being the most important electronic music band. And I’m not taking anything away from them. But in terms of influence, I’d say Yellow Magic Orchestra is just as important – if not more important.

They’ve had a bigger impact on popular music than most people realize. They influenced everything from David Bowie to Duran Duran to Mantronix to Daft Punk.

But their biggest impact – by far – has been on video game music. You know all those 8-bit and 16-bit chiptunes you all love so much? Yellow Magic Orchestra provided the template!

We should not be playing any part in enabling this conflict to continue.

I'm really hoping you don't need me to tell you that using machine learning ("AI") systems to identify potential targets and then to suggest that they be targeted when at home with their family members, including children, is one of the most abhorrent, unethical, inhumane things I've ever seen. There is absolutely no excuse for developing these systems. Technology is never neutral. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/apr/03/israel-gaza-ai-database-hamas-airstrikes

Now I understand why the civilian casualty death rate is so high. Horrendous.

What's also scary is that military institutions all over the world will be watching this and wondering how they can apply the same AI tools as strategies in future operations for themselves. The genie is out of the bottle and this is going to change how wars and conflicts are executed going forward.

Can anyone explain to me how these people sleep at night? I just don’t understand how a company that feeds kids can see a profit rise of 30% as anything other than a damning indictment of the quality of their food and treatment of their workers.

mackaj,
@mackaj@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@CatherineFlick

Everything is just about the money now. My local dentist for example since being gobbled up by Portman Dental Care group now no longer accepts new NHS patients. If you fall off the NHS registry for any reason - like if your dentist retires, you can't get back on. They're only interested in high profit Private dental care.

Socially responsible business doesn't have much status in today's Western world.

Of the top 10 most active servers it lists, eight of them are federating, one is offering limited federation (infosec.exchange), and one is de-federating Threads (mas.to).

Of course, there’s some notable large servers missing from this list. For example, is misskey.io federating with Threads?

So @KiwiEV reviews the Jeep Avenger, its an OK small city hatchback

Its totally compensating for not being a jeep by having a lot of jeep 'dna' glued onto it, which is fine

But its worst aspect is its price and position in the market, at $67k its terrible value

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PTriZHvyYZA

mackaj,
@mackaj@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rjdlandscapes

Those prices look very steep, are they dealer prices? I've read that dealers slap massive markups on cars in the US and lobby for laws to stop buyers from cutting them out of the loop.

In the UK for example the MG4 has an RRP from £26,995 to £36,495. Converted that's $46k tops.

For supporters of a economy, its all looking a bit like the Betamax/VHS choice in the 1980s (for this of you old enough to recall the river video system);

the promise of a system is increasingly taking the Betamax role; it may be a superior technology, but all the main are going down the - route (the VHS option).
