I learnt yesterday that a former upstairs neighbor who I lived with for eight years was killed in a car accident and her son is in critical condition.

I emailed the current residents of the house to let them know of this tragedy.

The neighbor who just moved here from New York responded to ask why I was bothering her with this information and why should she care about someone sheโ€™s never met.

I used to post of a lot of snarky tech Hot Takes.

I have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a perpetual state of cynicism and snark.

For the most part, tech is full of people trying to do the right thing most of the time in order to care for their loved ones.

The bad apples โ€” and boy are there some bad ones โ€” are better snarked about people other than me.

TLDR: Iโ€™m tired and snark is temporarily fun but ultimately draining to the work at hand.

An (admittedly) snarky corollary is more time someone has to post snark and/or Hot Takes online, the less focused they are on their teams, their products, or everyone that doesnโ€™t involve their day job.

Second corollary: since vanishing few of us are going to become truly rich or famous in Tech, most dumb comments, stupid PowerPoints, cringe-worthy trend hopping, and clout chasing behavior is just a response to people trying to cling on to whatever perch they have in an incredibly competitive industry.

Third corollary:

The more someone talks about what they do, the less actual work they probably do.

I wish there were a better mechanism to lift up the quiet people who work behind the scenes to hold tech together, rather than the brassy quick talkers who in all likelihood deliver less to the actual codebase.

It has taken over a year to be able to go through my late husbandโ€™s dresser drawers and donate his old socks and undershirts.

When I was putting them in the box to be taken away, I picked them up and put them to my face.

His clothes smelled like him, for a brief, fleeting moment.
What a gift.

Touching his socks brought back so many other memories.

Since his loss, Iโ€™ve come to see how many of his daily activities made the soundscape that made me feel I was at home.

I had completely forgotten that my alarm clock for years and years was the sound of him opening his sock drawer, sitting down at the end of the bed, and sliding his socks on.
