Simple calculation. If you pack solar panels on the giant flat roofs of shopping malls (and maybe add them as shade covers on the giant parking places AND add some big storage batteries, you can offer FREE charging for all EVs, cover most of the power usage of the complete shopping mall and on good days even sell electricity to the grid. Same for airports. What's not to like? cc @isotopp

#Digitalkompetenz

Also ZUERST Cell Broadcast, DANN NINA/KatWarn. OK?

"Nach den Warnungen über die Warn-Apps "Katwarn" und "Nina", sowie den Deutschen Wetterdienst sei eine zusätzliche Warnung per Cell Broadcast nicht notwendig gewesen."

I recently got quite some flak for discussing what satellites burning up in the atmosphere after their planned lifetime of 6 years could do to the stratosphere. Adding tons of aluminium and other elements as fine aerosol particles. Well. New research has just been published:

Follow this thread for a boring story of me delivering my German tax filings manually on time. It will include me arriving at home, printing 16 pages, taking the S-Bahn to the tax man and putting an envelope in a post box.

You know what big electricity companies, authorities and lobbyists REALLY fear? That with (hyperlocal) solar, wind and a bit of storage capacity (batteries, hydro and yes, the batteries in EV) we can turn a lot of places/small villages/city quarters into autark zones, where households can get electricity effectively for free, with maybe a low flatrate to keep the infrastructure humming. A local, federated grid along the "help your neighbours" principle.

How many rebuilds exist of Linux distributions other than Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

How many people make rebuilds available of the subscription-only Ubuntu packages with security fixes?

How many other distributions develop so completely in the open as Red Hat does with the gitlab repos?

Context matters, IMHO.

Running your own e-mail server might seem complicated and geeky but will you trust those US based megacorps managing your digital existence once Trump gets elected? Especially when you’re not an US citizen? I decided many years ago.

It's 2023 and my German internet provider (DTAG) still forces a change of public IP (v4 and v6) address every 24 hours ATM for me, making sure I cannot run my own services reliably from my server at home.

UPDATE: Changed the wording to reflect my individual problems, as it seems others do not have these effects. Still: you cannot get a dedicated IPv4 address or IPv6 range as a home user/domestic customer.

I am Dutch :krulorange: I live in Munich, Germany. An old friend once warned me about living in Germany. It was two sentences. It still haunts me, as it seems to be so true, but I really hope it isn't.

"Germans have this wonderful talent to find new problems in every solution. Everything is "Ja, aber" (yes, but)"

Would you agree?

Open offer: If you are confused by the recent announcement on source RPMS and all the drama of "Red Hat isn't open anymore!1!!" and other weird accusations — DM me and I will happily explain the details in a call. I also agree to you recording that call and use the result in any way you want.

Could y'all please add (paywalled) or ($) or (€) when you post links here to content behind paywalls? It is really annoying to click through several "consent banners" and other popups, thus feeding gazillions of trackers, just to get the "to continue reading, please subscribe" message.

As instance I do NOT want to moderate DMs. The last three spam waves from mastodon.social however were sent as DMs.

I therefore urge @Gargron to make it the default that DMs can only be send between users that have a follow relationship.

The current default is that anyone can send anyone DMs. I consider this to be a loophole that spammers will continue to exploit, causing a lot of extra work for site admins in an area they should keep out of, in the interest of user privacy.

The best EV for anyone living in a city is an electric bicycle, IMHO and experience. A comfy and practical one. Not some pseudo sporty stuff. With big bags. So you can do your shopping, go out for a picknick in the park, to the lake or whatever. You don't need a car for everything. This is my daily ride. And at a bit below 900€ quite affordable, IMHO.

I am starting to miss the "hide reply" option from #Twitter. Some of my toots attract reply-guys with their typical negativity that I would really like to remove from some threads to keep the positivity of other replies alive. UPDATE: Or implemented as a Content Warning style option (“Hidden by thread owner/curator”) where the reader has to consciously click to reveal the content.

I guess I am a bit weird. But when you get solar electricity effectively for free, can use it yourself at home, maybe even store it in batteries — didn't you already get enough? Why all this fuss about selling the excess electricity? Just give it away to your neighbours, for free. Whatever gets used locally, reduces the problems on the grid, which is often used an excuse by Big Electricity to refuse to buy solar electricity. 1/n

If some people say the is a left-progressive project, it only shows how successful we collectively are to block the Nazis. Loads of far-right instances and users exist in the fediverse. Gab, anyone? But defederation and blocking makes that part invisible to most of us. They still exist and federate amongst themselves. ActivityPub, the protocol, is neutral. We decide what we want and not want. The fediverse is a herd of Venn diagrams, not a closed circle.

Guess who gets headlines, live reporting and loads of tax payed navy vessels to save the passengers?

A submersible carrying 5 passengers to look at the titanic wreck disappears and navy ships are immediately deployed to save and rescue.

Facebook/Meta starts talking about the "Extend" phase of Embrace, Extend, Extinguish as predicted:

"“You could imagine an extension to the protocol eventually — of saying like, ‘I want to support micropayments,’ or … like, ‘hey, feel free to show me ads, if that supports you.’ Kind of like a way for you to self-label or self-opt-in. That would be great,”
