~100 more Starlink v1 satellites will be burning up in the upper atmosphere in the next 6 months, bringing up the total number of de-orbited Starlink satellites to ~500 out of 6000 launched
https://api.starlink.com/public-files/Commitment%20to%20Space%20Sustainability.pdf

De-orbiting satellites by burning them up did work when the volume of satellites was small, but already 10% of aerosol particules in the stratosphere contain aluminum/other metals.
The problem is only going to get worse with the launch of megaconstellations https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2313374120

I used to call myself an Apple fan, but I’m clearly not unhinged enough to qualify these days.

Apparently their latest thing is to claim that nobody has ever in the history of governance tried to regulate access to market-making private infrastructure

if you use Linux on your personal computer: what do you like about it?

I used to be super into customizing my window manager, but now I mostly like that it's so easy to install software, and that the environment is the same as on a Linux server

(please no arguing about whether people "should" use Linux on their personal computers, I'm just curious about why you personally like it)

hth,

@b0rk

Mostly it is not having to keep two (or more) mental models in my head about how the system functions. My servers and desktops operate pretty much the same. And for the most part the tooling between the two is the same.

There is no up-sell of new features, and there is little risk of the hardware getting obsolete due to OS requirements.

Ease of customisation is a plus, and the fact most of it can be done via file manipulation is a plus.

hth, to Unions

Anyone skeptical about the power of #unions and what they can do for workers (and remember; if you don't own the means of production, you are a worker) should check out Iceland with its 92.2% participation.

Today three large unions, that collectively have around 1/5th of the nation as members, agreed to terms with industry representatives and the government for all kinds of workers benefits for the next four years.

Unions work, as long as people join them.

Love this online recipe hack!
...

If you add “cooked.wiki/“ to beginning of ANY recipe url (before the https:/) it strips away everything but the recipe and organizes the ingredients and method into separate columns.

Also adds a dictation option too!

#cooking #recipe

The same baked oatmeal recipe but run through cooked.wiki. It is now cleaned up and organized like a cookbook with ingredients in a column to the left and the method in a column to the right. Everything else is stripped away.

hth,

@Maxton For anyone interested, here is a bookmarklet (a bookmark where the url is Javascript) that will, once clicked, automatically direct what ever recipe page you are on to cooked.wiki.

javascript:location.href='https://cooked.wiki/%27+encodeURIComponent(document.location.href)

hth, to Kotlin

I'll be honest, after years of using #Kotlin working with #Dart and #Flutter in the year 2023 feels reminiscent of how it was using Java 7 for Android development more than a decade ago.

hth, (edited )

@gryzor There are aspects of both the language and framework that can at times feel good to use.

The way that the asynchronous model of Dart is implemented is very simple to use, and cross platform development is a breeze in Flutter.

But everything else is just blown out of the water by the second mover advantage that has, in addition to having been built on top a much more powerful language such as .

Not to mention the robust ecosystem of tooling available in JVM land.

10.000 earthquakes in the last week and a newly confirmed inflow of magma into the system.

It seems likely that this baby is probably going to go pop soon-ish.

Hopefully the international airport which is right next to all those quakes will be untouched 😬

hth,
hth,

A lava tunnel now seems to stretch underneath the fishing town of Grindavik and earthquake activity concentrated underneath it (orange spot on lower end of image).

The town was fully evacuated during the night.

This is starting to feel uncomfortably like that Tommy Lee Jones movie Volcano from 1997.

It is a bit annoying when, after buying official replacement parts at considerable markup, those parts end up not fitting the product and instead cause damage to it.

@gryzor@androiddev.social avatar

I have been using for years, but in recent years I have been extremely jealous of (and by natural extension ) tab groups. I believe it's the best implementation and execution for me.

Unfortunately, there's nothing similar for Firefox. I believe I've tried every single extension that claims to do this and none is as simple and good as what chrome does out of the box. Ffox containers are not a replacement. It's a compromise I make every day. I'd literally pay for that.

hth,

@gryzor Never understood why they dropped that feature.

    Turns out the TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) used by almost every level of first responders in a big portion of the world had serious security flaws and even a deliberate backdoor.

    I was in the Icelandic search and rescue at the time when the system was being introduced in Iceland some 20 years ago, and used them during operations.

    As one can imagine there are some fairly sensitive things that go across those channels that no one unauthorized should have access to.

    With the city and surrounding areas shaking (1600x earthquakes in the last 24 hours) it seems Iceland's newest volcano is about to erupt.

    That would make it the third time it does so, with each instance spaced with about roughly a year between.

    src: https://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes

    hth,

    @MichaelPorter @vicgrinberg

    Earthquakes are very common, and on a geological scale so are eruptions. So in that sense this is 'Iceland as usual'.

    However the frequency of this particular volcano (having erupted twice in two years, and likely to erupt again now) is unusual.

    But this would be a very small and 'cute' eruption that does not pose any risk to travelers nor air traffic in the country. Nothing like the '10 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull.
