Starting to see why so few projects do PoE or do cursed PoE. Its quite a thing to implement. USB PD feels almost easy compared (assuming vendor IC does the state machine heavy lifting).

@whitequark sort of! The standard magnetics just can't handle the current but could in theoery do it.
You get magnetics for PoE specifically but you also need to make sure its for the right standard because of the different power requirements of the verious PoE standards.
Finding magnetics thst support 802.3at and that don't cost a fortune was not easy.

@whitequark Like I already use the Silvertel modules but there is so much stuff still around it to make those usable and not have them spew EMI.

I don't have enough good cameras to stream all the fat pigeons in nests on my balcony.
Not sure how I'm gonna stream both of these.
This one is the one from last and previous year, its about twice the size of the rock pigeons on stream.

@niklas hm do they have webcam sensors? I do have decent IP cameras here but thats no where remotely close to DSLR

@niklas thanks for the tip that sounds great. Found some cheap ones from a UK seller.
None of them have the PSU but I assume thats easy to hack or it might even support PoE?

@niklas ok yea while the one on the right is actual Ethernet its only for firmware upgrades unfortunately.
Do you happen to have the pinout for the RJ45 control cable? Or are there off the shelf serial adapters for that for network gear?

@niklas @danimo Right now I got ESP32-S3 on USB-C for USB in and then from ESP to 3x RS232 ICs (cause it can do 3x UART and its pretty cheap). Made more sense to me than USB to UART cause then you have the choice between USB control and network control and could translate to more common standards directly if you want.

Then pluggable terminal and barrel jack for power in.
Was thinking about PoE but the higher wattage standards get quite pricey.

I could drop a WS281x behind each RJ45 if useful?

@niklas @danimo so just some 2.54mm pin headers that give you 12V Data GND where you can solder on a JST pigtail that the strips ususally come with?

@danimo The S3 also has the RMII interfaces. Can check if there are cheap PHYs in the LCSC catalog, could probably even do with a 10M one.

E: oh nvm it does not, maybe wiznet then cause I do like having native USB

@danimo @niklas @unlink So what I would do is add a W5500, its reasonably cheap and has better driver support outside of ESP-IDF and comes with PHY built-in.
Then maybe add a footprint for a Silvertel PoE module that you can solder in if needed but I'm not sure if ~10W is enough for the cams? Couldn't find specs of the original PSU but given the codec powers it via RJ45 it can't be that much.

You could leave the whole Ethernet bit DNP if cheaper options are needed where Ethernet is not needed.

FedEx is really the most annoying shipment option here atm.
The only way to have them deliver the package to a neighbour or have it dropped off at your door is to email them and hope a person will read the email in time.
Otherwise its perpetual failed delivery hell when you're not home/asleep because they have no depots where you could go pick it up after a failed delivery x.x
