🚀 Pretty cool overview by Tim Dodd of the design of two German rockets: One and Isar's 🇩🇪🇪🇺

I had the chance to visit the Spectrum assembly hall so already knew about the amazing 3D printing of their thrust chambers, but didn't appreciate how different the design philosophy was between both companies.

RFA is heavily leveraging an automotive supply chain to reduce cost and offer a scalability advantage compared to other aerospace companies.

well, I wondered how many Starlink satellites would fall out of orbit after the solar storm, and we have an answer: somewhere between 7 and 13

fj,

@gsuberland I don't think that's related?
The ones that have re-entered were already scheduled to be de-orbited ahead of the solar storm.

The implementation of this is unclear at the moment, but it’s laughable that a country that can’t pass basic privacy legislation is taking action to hide data from transponders of billionaires’ private jets #priorities

loved visiting paris and generally loved the metro. but the ticketing experience was beyond awful in several ways. I hope they're fixing some of that before the olympics 😬

I've been wanting to look into formally verifying #Rust code with #Hax for a while, but wasn't sure where to start.

Thankfully Lucas Franceschino from @cryspen has now a tutorial to get started!

Regardless of your political leanings, it's hard to not see as a massive achievement of the Commission.

Without joint purchasing of gas, the prices would have gone through the roof, and there would have been nowhere as much deployment of renewables.

This is the European cooperation and solidarity that Euroskeptics and nationalists want to destroy.

    @sincereabsurdity I think that would be a shortcut at this point. The paper definitely needs attention and more research is needed to confirm computational complexity of the algorithm against various lattice parameter sets. But curious what other folks think like @malb or @ducasleo

    Interesting paper from 2018 quantifying the impact of #solarflares on #GNSS systems.

    The 🇨🇳 BeiDou system was outperforming 🇪🇺 Galileo and 🇺🇸GPS during solar flare conditions due to more frequently updated broadcast ionospheric models.

    https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2018RS006591

    I know Galileo/EGNOS did a recent system upgrade to provide increased resilience against solar peak activity, anticipating Solar Cycle 25, but not sure what those consisted of. Maybe @bert_hubert would know?

    "the solar storm ruined the accuracy of RTK systems for many farmers using John Deere tractors”

    "Tom Schwarz, who owns an organic farm in Nebraska, told me he had to stop planting on Friday and Saturday because of the issue, and said that the outage, combined with a bad weather forecast in the next few days, is threatening the small time window that he has to plant corn.”

    According to the Deere website, their Radio RTK does only use GPS and GLONASS.

    ~100 more Starlink v1 satellites will be burning up in the upper atmosphere in the next 6 months, bringing up the total number of de-orbited Starlink satellites to ~500 out of 6000 launched
    https://api.starlink.com/public-files/Commitment%20to%20Space%20Sustainability.pdf

    De-orbiting satellites by burning them up did work when the volume of satellites was small, but already 10% of aerosol particules in the stratosphere contain aluminum/other metals.
    The problem is only going to get worse with the launch of megaconstellations https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2313374120

    fj,

    7 Starlink satellites burned up in the higher atmosphere yesterday.

    Unlike what some are saying, these are satellites that were already planned to re-enter ahead of the solar storm and were launched in 2020/2021.

    fj,
    @fj@mastodon.social avatar

    @doc From their own press releases, it's 5 years maximum.

    > Atmospheric drag at these altitudes
    will deorbit a satellite naturally in 5 years or less
