Anyone skeptical about the power of #unions and what they can do for workers (and remember; if you don't own the means of production, you are a worker) should check out Iceland with its 92.2% participation.
Today three large unions, that collectively have around 1/5th of the nation as members, agreed to terms with industry representatives and the government for all kinds of workers benefits for the next four years.
I'll be honest, after years of using #Kotlin working with #Dart and #Flutter in the year 2023 feels reminiscent of how it was using Java 7 for Android development more than a decade ago.
@gryzor There are aspects of both the language and framework that can at times feel good to use.
The way that the asynchronous model of Dart is implemented is very simple to use, and cross platform development is a breeze in Flutter.
But everything else is just blown out of the water by the second mover advantage that #Compose has, in addition to having been built on top a much more powerful language such as #Kotlin.
Not to mention the robust ecosystem of tooling available in JVM land.
A lava tunnel now seems to stretch underneath the fishing town of Grindavik and earthquake activity concentrated underneath it (orange spot on lower end of image).
The town was fully evacuated during the night.
This is starting to feel uncomfortably like that Tommy Lee Jones movie Volcano from 1997.
It is a bit annoying when, after buying official replacement parts at considerable markup, those parts end up not fitting the product and instead cause damage to it. #aeropress
The fact that my phone is IP67 rated, meaning I could go swimming with it for 30 minutes without issue, disturbs me thanks to decades of conditioning regarding electronics and water.
Turns out the TETRA (Terrestrial Trunked Radio) used by almost every level of first responders in a big portion of the world had serious security flaws and even a deliberate backdoor.
I was in the Icelandic search and rescue at the time when the system was being introduced in Iceland some 20 years ago, and used them during operations.
As one can imagine there are some fairly sensitive things that go across those channels that no one unauthorized should have access to.
@vicgrinberg@hth Ah, I wish… I’d love to go to Iceland, but this is my sister’s second trip and I’m going to house/dog/cat sit. On the plus side, the view of the Rockies on the dog walks will be nice 😊
100 years ago the first Icelandic art gallery and live-in studio opened, and it is one of my favourite buildings in the city.
Designed and built specifically for Icelandic sculptor Einar Jónsson, it was made in a neoclassical style, with some interesting design additions both on the inside and out.
This picture of it, newly built, standing alone on a hill overlooking the rest of, what was then just a town, is also a favourite.
@craiggrannell Effectively every piece of land not already designed as a park is being developed. Then there are the numerous renovations happening all over.
@hth I mean, at least they didn’t go with that weird plan years back to carve the city in two with a motorway. But, yeah, it is an ever-shifting city. I do like it though and miss it. (Although I’ll happily admit I don’t miss the weather!)
