Strategies for the free fediverses

https://privacy.thenexus.today/strategies-for-the-free-fediverses/

The fediverse is evolving into different regions

  • "Meta's fediverses", federating with Meta to allow communications, potentially using services from Meta such as automated moderation or ad targeting, and potentially harvesting data on Meta's behalf.

  • "free fediverses" that reject Meta – and surveillance capitalism more generally

The free fediverses have a lot of advantages over Meta and Meta's fediverses, some of which will be very hard to counter, and clearly have enough critical mass that they'll be just fine.

Here's a set of strategies for the free fediverses to provide a viable alternative to surveillance capitalism. They build on the strengths of today's fediverse at its best – including natural advantages the free fediverses have that Threads and Meta's fediverses will having a very hard time countering – but also are hopefully candid about weaknesses that need to be addressed. It's a long list, so I'll be spreading out over multiple posts; this post currently goes into detail on the first two.

  • Opposition to Meta and surveillance capitalism is an appealing position. Highlight it!

  • Focus on consent (including consent-based federation), privacy, and safety

  • Emphasize "networked communities"

  • Support concentric federations of instances and communities

  • Consider "transitively defederating" Meta's fediverses (as well as defederating Threads)

  • Consider working with people and instances in Meta's fediverses (and Bluesky, Dreamwidth, and other social networks) whose goals and values align with the free fediverses'

  • Build a sustainable ecosystem

  • Prepare for Meta's (and their allies') attempts to paint the free fediverses in a bad light

  • Reduce the dependency on Mastodon

  • Prioritize accessibility, which is a huge opportunity

  • Commit to anti-fascist, anti-racist, anti-colonial, and pro-LGBTQIA2S+ principles, policies, practices, and norms for the free fediverses

  • Organize!

Hey folks, I'm writing a piece for @fumacapt on why RSS matters and why it's cool.

Can you share your personal perspective, resources you go back to, clients for different platforms?

That would be ace.

It's going to be out next week, and it's in Portuguese.

hamishcampbell,
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

@john_fisherman the issue is that only a tiny number of people actually want to live this path, how does the #openweb have use and meaning to the vast majority. This is a social, rather than tech issue that is urgent to address for the needed social change and challenge in this era of #climatechaos

@john_fisherman humm think the might be bot that trashes my website every time I post a link on social media, happens pretty much every time i post a link in some places. Its rebooted :)

Or the website needs an update, it is a bit broken, an issue with our #DIY culture of self-hosting, when you lose focus code stops working...

The is no way to edit or remove questions. The is no way to talk to anyone... A normal "trust" fail, except this time it is a hardcoded due to the use of this CMS for the event. Before this we used with which worked well, then silos that worked after a fight each time to get chat turned on, now we are here , every tech event has pushed this "control" mess over the public. What are you guys in "control" going to do to stop this.

@rriemann @gvlx

Had a look thought the #Particify site, and it seems to be only a ONE-WAY tool, with controlled/shaped feedback. Which is why whoever organized #NGIForum23 used it. This is not "people to people" and it's not "trust". How can we go about putting in an official complaint to #NGI and their sponsors about this mess they keep pushing #EU

hamishcampbell,
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

@gvlx is this https://particify.de/en/ hard to find licencing info and process... what can you find :)

hamishcampbell,
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

@rriemann @gvlx am looking at it now and trying to find out if it has any way from the public to chat to each other or to the organizers on the streaming video or inside the CMS have not found anything yet, do you know if it has this function?

@aral @pluralistic

You were right about the issues with and WordPress I am finding it hard to keep the blog online with basic sharing and the AP Pugin.

@pfefferle might be good to put out an approximate idea of the server increase to keep a WordPress site working with the plugin?

@aral it's mastodon flood attack, I did rebuild the server a month ago so it should recover after the flood cross fingers.

Though @pluralistic has clarified his definition since the post so likely needs an update. I was commenting more on how people were using the term.

I get that #nostr is popular with people who don't want to share a server with anybody (and their rules). But don't lots of people achieve that with a stripped down implementation of #ActivityPub?

hamishcampbell,
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

@wjmaggos nostr is not a bad project, but it's still using instances's just calling them relays and not promoting the community side of this. The conversations around this are not the best. People argue that and are both spoilers on there is some truth to this, though am more they are all and diversity is good, but please be honest path.

hamishcampbell, to internet
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

The "culture" and assumptions behind these projects differ. #bluesky comes from Twitter, which has a history of surveillance capitalism, while #Nostr comes from the #Encryptionists and #bitcoin communities. #activertypub, on the other hand, is rooted in the #4opens traditions and the #openweb.

Using the power of #4opens

The #4opens has many useful roles, one that needs highlighting now is grassroots tech projects being pushed aside by obviously parasite #NGO and #fashernista tech projects that grow from them.

Over the last 20 years, in my in-depth expirence this happens in every case

The open process makes visible this #techshit, so we can compost it at source.

Use the #4opens in all your grassroots tech, please.

https://narrowboatworld.com/14916-net-value-of-cart-assets-plummets the mess we have made on the water from 40 years of worshipping neoliberalism. The experiment has failed, and this ideology is dead. When do we lift our heads

hamishcampbell, to fediverse
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

The new #spreadmastodon project needs to balance the damage with the good it does with its outreach project.

The wider #Fediverse relying heavily on a single platform, mastodon or instance https://mastodon.social, can have negative consequences. Leading to a concentration of power and influence in the hands of a few individuals and entities. This can result in issues such as censorship, lack of innovation, and a loss of privacy for users.

What to call this internet that we should move to. I use as this is what it is, or .5 for more geeky conversations. Then fall back to for insiders and just for the normal people.

hamishcampbell, to random
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

Meany #fashernistas have a troubling view of theory and practice. All good horizontalists understand that they come from practice. At the basis of this is #DIY that is working through practice to build theory.

To start from theory go ground and round and round then try and put this into practice, ends in a dizzy mess. When this mess is imposed as a solution, we obviously get more #techshit to compost or academic wank to clean up.

hamishcampbell, to random
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

Looking at the world I see "common sense" insanity and mental illness as the dominating social paths. This wave has been building for 40 years and is maybe finally building to a crest. To get any good outcome small groups of us have to surf down this cresting wave of social madness and disintegration to plant the seedlings of fresh growth in the compost of todays and worshiping decay.

hamishcampbell, to random

#stupidindividualism is a constant poison. People treat all social thinking as personal criticism.
This is a constant #blocking and spreads mess just about ever were.

Thus, the #dontbeaprat communication.

Threads is auto fallowing irrelevant people FOR me, #Bluesky, I can't find ANYONE interesting and have one follower.

Both are obviously failing for my use case, will see if this changes.

hamishcampbell, to meta
@hamishcampbell@mastodon.social avatar

Pushing defederation from #meta are not wrong in their sentiment, the #dotcons are vile and cons. But they are wrong from a practical sense, the #Fediverse and #ActivityPub are #openweb based on #4opens the data is in the commons - you do not have technical tools from stopping the #dotcons as the data in the end is in the open, unencrypted, in the database, in #RSS and in open flows.

They are fighting #closedweb on a #openweb platform - makes no sense at all, this incoherences is everywhere
