I discuss sociology of dominations and history of reputation.

"The University administration respects all student protests, just not this one. Students have fought for many important causes over the years, and their right to protest is sacrosanct. In this case, however, we must arrest and slander them.

"The Romans conquered the world through seriousness, discipline, organisation, continuity of vision and method; through the conviction that they were a superior race, born to command; through the well-considered, methodically calculated use of the most ruthless cruelty, cold perfidy and the most hypocritical propaganda, employed simultaneously or in turn; by an unshakeable resolution to always sacrifice everything to prestige, without ever being sensitive either to peril, or to pity, or to any human respect; by the art of decomposing under terror the very soul of their adversaries, or of putting them to sleep with hope, before enslaving them with arms; finally by such skilful handling of the crudest lie that they have deceived even posterity and are still deceiving us. "Life expectancy at birth in Roman Egypt was just 27.3 for women and 26.2 for men."

"As the empire expanded, the Romans took the show—including all their diseases—on the road. In every location, “The empire’s arrival led to the hasty construction of the first town, in Roman style, with baths and aqueducts, drains, heating systems, and latrines. Despite the amenities, a reasonable answer to the question ‘What have the Romans ever done for us?’ might have been ‘Got us sick.’ Mortality rates went up.”

Toward late 2017 I had a colleague flag me that there was a secret contract known as [#Maven] between Google and the Department of Defense [DOD] to build AI systems for drone targeting. That for me was when my organising started, because I realised I had been presenting very clear arguments that people agreed with… but it didn’t really matter. This was not an issue of force of argument. This was an issue of the ultimate goals of this company are profit and growth and DOD contracts were always going to sort of trump these intellectual and moral considerations."

In 1910 in Copenhagen, the 2nd International Conference of Socialist Women adopted the idea of an "International Women's Day" from a proposal by Clara Zetkin (German Social Democratic Party), although no date was set.

The "Journal du CNRS" notes that "Women's Day was therefore the initiative of the socialist movement and not of the feminist movement, which was very active at the time". The historian Françoise Picq adds that "it was precisely to counteract the influence of feminist groups on the women of the people that Clara Zetkin proposed this day", rejecting "the alliance with the 'feminists of the bourgeoisie'": https://lejournal.cnrs.fr/articles/journee-des-femmes-la-veritable-histoire-du-8-mars @histodons

If you show the value of a victim, you feel empathy. This increases the desire for equality but you feel bad: it endangers your health.

On the contrary, iIf you stress the mistake of a victim, you protect yourself: you feel like it should not happen to you. Society supports such detachment if the perpetrator is a white man or a police(wo)man.
Blaming the victim justifies inequality, discriminations, violence by the strongest. It normalizes (adult, white, male or cis) privileges. Therefore it normalizes patriarchy and white supremacy.

The terrible human toll in Gaza has many causes.
A chilling investigation by +972 highlights efficiency:

  1. An engineer: “When a 3-year-old girl is killed in a home in Gaza, it’s because someone in the army decided it wasn’t a big deal for her to be killed.”

  2. An AI outputs "100 targets a day". Like a factory with murder delivery:

"According to the investigation, another reason for the large number of targets, and the extensive harm to civilian life in Gaza, is the widespread use of a system called “Habsora” (“The Gospel”), which is largely built on artificial intelligence and can “generate” targets almost automatically at a rate that far exceeds what was previously possible. This AI system, as described by a former intelligence officer, essentially facilitates a “mass assassination factory.”"

  1. "The third is “power targets,” which includes high-rises and residential towers in the heart of cities, and public buildings such as universities, banks, and government offices."

“The #protocol was that even if you don’t know for sure that the machine is right, you know that statistically it’s fine. So you go for it,” said a source who used #Lavender.

“It has proven itself,” said B., the senior officer. “There’s something about the statistical approach that sets you to a certain norm and standard. There has been an illogical amount of [bombings] in this operation. This is unparalleled, in my memory. And I have much more trust in a statistical mechanism than a soldier who lost a friend two days ago. Everyone there, including me, lost people on October 7. The machine did it coldly. And that made it easier.”

Another intelligence source said: “In war, there is no time to incriminate every target. So you’re willing to take the margin of error of using artificial intelligence, risking collateral damage and civilians dying, and risking attacking by mistake, and to live with it.”

B., the senior officer, claimed that in the current war, “I would invest 20 seconds for each target at this stage, and do dozens of them every day. I had zero added value as a human, apart from being a stamp of approval. It saved a lot of time.”

According to B., a common error occurred “if the [Hamas] target gave [his phone] to his son, his older brother, or just a random man. That person will be bombed in his house with his family. This happened often. These were most of the mistakes caused by Lavender,” B. said.

The text pointed below may help. Sarah Aziza, through a stirring mix of personal reflection and philosophical reckoning, disabuses the Western witness of its self-gratifying power, instead – amid Israel’s openly broadcast yet unimpeded march towards genocide in Gaza – unmasking the impotence, deceit and hollowness that witnessing currently entails. More than a collective indictment or last-gasp scream of defiance into the void, Aziza’s own testimony guides the reader towards a form of witness no longer elevated in angelic, uncompromised distance, but instead manifest in the embodied, intimate, ego-displacing position of “sacrifice, mourning and resisting.”

One member of CNN’s staff described how the policy works in practice. “‘War-crime’ and ‘genocide’ are taboo words,” the person said. “Israeli bombings in Gaza will be reported as ‘blasts’ attributed to nobody, until the Israeli military weighs in to either accept or deny responsibility. Here is an overview of how British rich nobility weaponised "race" to deport people in servitude.

Let's start with a landmark book:

estelle,
@estelle@techhub.social avatar

"Of course, one day the indentured period would end and the servant would be free. That is one of the fundamental differences drawn between white indentured servitude and black slavery. One was a temporary condition; the other was perpetual. Except that huge numbers of white servants didn’t live to see the day of freedom. In the early days, the majority of servants died still in bondage. Moreover, the bulk of those who did outlive their servitude ended up no better than when they’d arrived. They would emerge from bondage landless and poor (p. 111)."

"It’s difficult to talk about #manliness in absolute terms. What is considered virile depends on social background and age. In my survey, being #manly meant asserting one’s body and physical strength, and accepting sexist insults. Younger people in particular anchor manliness in their bodies in this way. For older men, manliness can be achieved through professional integration. In the end, what is defined as manly is always defined in opposition to #feminine; so being manly is the obligation not to #feminise oneself."

"Dominance over girls is expressed in many ways. In adolescence, it manifests itself in the direct control of their sexuality (or any outward sign of sexuality, such as dress, geographical mobility and any form of communication with boys). As a result, they are the focus of #reputations that place them in two radically opposed categories: "good girls" and "whores"."
