Sonos says its controversial app redesign took ‘courage’ https://www.theverge.com/2024/5/9/24152675/sonos-new-app-bad-reviews-response-statement

@verge Sonos has destroyed accessibility as well. Have you seen the stories & maybe you could cover it as well?: Jonathan Mosen: Boosting Living Blindfully (podcast): Delighted to see the tech press taking an interest in the Sonos debacle. We need this to keep the pressure on. New Sonos app breaks accessibility for visually impaired users, here’s what this advocate recommends

So... I left Evernote months ago when they hiked their pro plan subscription (like 163% !) It was bloated, and their free plan was crippled; that + the company had been struggling for years to find a CEO who could bring some kind of vision back to the app. It all flopped and they were sold to Bending Spoons.

Over the ensuing months, I was fortunate to find a replacement! An Open Source, fully encrypted, Evernote killer. And what a note taking app it has become.

A major release (v3.0) was launched officially today. 8 months of non-stop development and testing by a two-man Dev team has really brought this app center stage. These guys are hands-on with listening to user feedback on their NN Discord server; when they find time to sleep beats me (the plight of the developer).
Read about this latest journey AND all of the great new features of v3.0 that are note-taking game changers, on their blog post:

https://blog.notesnook.com/introducing-notesnook-v3/

You're going to hear more about Notesnook in the weeks and months to come and it won't be coming from me. It will be from a growing userbase that can't help but share the awesomeness that Notesnook brings to notetaking.

If you read my weekend blog post, you know that I've been pointing out that the predicate crime in the Trump trial is not clear.

(For what I mean, see my weekend blog post).

Here is what the Washington Post reported.

See screenshots #1 and #2.

Here is the law: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/laws/ELN/17-152?utm_medium=email&wpisrc=nl-nationalpopup&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=wp_the_trump_trials

To be clear: I have no idea how this trial will turn out. I cannot substitute my judgment for the jury because I am not seeing what they are seeing.

@Teri_Kanefield I only know Australian tax law well but surely the reimbursement would have to be business related to be deductible otherwise it is a personal expense fraudulently put through business - Paying off a porn star NDA is in no way business related even if done through a lawyer

dalereardon, to random
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield What if prosecution could show polls dropped with the Hollywood tape release? Then you would be using it to demonstrate the serious impact of a bad story on him to show why he would be so determined to stop this one - Then relevant & admissible?

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield And I would counter that we are not trying to prove the truth of the polls but rather that Trump believes them & therefore they are reliable evidence to him & help explain his conduct but then again correlation v causation is a problem

The K13 max is an 80% keyboard with a numbpad. I am confused. If it has the number pad, what's 80% about it? It says there are 90 keys... which keys got removed? https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k13-max-qmk-via-wireless-custom-mechanical-keyboard

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@objectinspace I think the 80% refers to the size of the keyboard rather than number of keys and I personally want a full size keyboard

dalereardon,

@objectinspace I'm not certain actually but I am trying to work out which mechanical keyboard to buy myself and it is a real pain that no shop has them to look at and touch in person

Google just announced some changes to their reCaptcha service... one of which being this:

"Renaming of the reCAPTCHA no-cost product to reCAPTCHA Lite, providing protection for up to 10,000 instead of 1 million assessments per month."

Instantly regret hooking so many websites up to this service now! 😩

That's a quota drop of 990,000 monthly requests.

A 99% reduction.

I’ve been thinking about “manufactured crises” in today’s media environment.

Remember the special master case? This was when Judge Cannon allowed for a special master and the appellate court said “nope.”

In the end, the drama hardly created a ripple: At least no more than frequently happens in complex cases when one side decides to challenge something.

Scroll down to the section I labeled: "Social Media Responds with. . . "

https://terikanefield.com/judgecannon/

(the first 10 people will get an error)

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield And I can assure you as a litigator, particularly in criminal cases, it was far better to have a really wrong decision as that was far more easily appealable

So how’s my search for a Substack replacement going? Honestly, it’s been frustrating. The fact is, Substack has the most comprehensive platform for email newsletters (thks to VC money!). The closest in features is Ghost, but the official service is too expensive ($50 per month for a newsletter my size) & I don’t want to install it on a server. Buttondown seems neat, but it is missing key features (search and static pages). I’ve tried newsletters on Wordpress before, but I didn’t like the result.

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@ricmac I don't use Substack as a publisher but I assure you that as an end user/reader Substack is absolutely awful/terrible. I hate every newsletter I have to try & read on Substack. You get shared email notifications across the multiple newsletters that I subscribe to which is awful for UX/UI. I find their whole website cluttered & difficult to use also. Admittedly I am a screenreader user but I kknow sighted people who also hate it

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@ricmac ConvertKit has a very nice new feature in their WP plugin (beta status currently) that will import all your CK newsletters into WP & let you publish them as posts keeping formatting intact. We bring them in as drafts (a choice) & touchup some formatting before publishing CK can also handle paid/free combo newsletters

Having an awful experience with Cloudways hosting & recommend everyone avoid them. I finished using them way back in 2016 & suddenly, completely out of the blue, they have sent me a bill for $7.70 for email addons that stopped using way back in 2016. They now threaten debt collectors. I tried to explain that obviously their system has malfunctioned and please fix it - very nicely but they refuse. What a way to treat people 1/...

IMPORTANT. Threads stated policy is to collect and exploit Fediverse user personal data without explicit consent.

Now is a very good time to review Threads Terms of Use (https://help.instagram.com/769983657850450) and Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944).

Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

dalereardon,
@dalereardon@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron @mastodonmigration I can already think of one way if they are devious enough - If I follow someone on threads, then threads can just insert sponsored posts into their timeline that auto syndicates over to my account on Mastodon - So Threads can generate advertising posts on behalf of people and make them look like normal posts which will come across - Twitter essentially did this at one point & may still be doing it to fool people into reading ads
