Farage being, once again, the top story on the BBC News website provides an excuse to repost this little slice of Internet poetry from 2017:

Reminder to other UK citizens not living in the UK: It's easy and quick to register for an overseas vote and there's no longer any time limit! If you haven't done it yet, do it now and be part of the General Election in July!

This might be Peak $work Posting (complete with LI link!), but it really is exciting: Microsoft just launched the Fabric design system that works across Angular and React apps...because it's Web Components underneath!

https://www.linkedin.com/posts/jasonfalk_fabricux-microsoftfabric-designsystem-activity-7199802763717853185-nnTV

Fabric is building on Fluent Web Components v3, which is the same set of FAST-based web components that we're rebuilding Edge's WebUIs on too. Legacy React and Angular apps get many of the benefits and we all get to share. Hot damn!

Once I thought, what if there was a CSS file that makes the document look like it is a command line interface... So I made one, but I really don't know what it could be used for :)

jQuery plugins depended on jQuery, and when jQuery went out of favor, they ended up in the junkyard.

There is all sorts of componentry built exclusively on React, limiting it to React-based sites. As React goes out of favor, they will end up in the junkyard. (Same with any framework-specific extension.)

But with Web Components... it seems like the story will end differently. If they are built without dependencies, they might just live as long as the web does.

A Pattern Language is one of my favorite books, and this abridged hypertext version by zenodotus280 is incredibly fun to explore with
#obsidian

The book explores humanism in design patterns at every scale from the layout of cities down to how you should choose chairs

zendotus280 did the hard work of linking patterns to each other which makes it possible to easily traverse the text across many more dimensions than you can flipping pages

I honestly enjoy writing good, descriptive alt text. Once you get used to it, it's no longer a chore, rather a fun exercise.

It gives you an opportunity to focus on the image you're sharing, sometimes revealing details you might miss.

It's a great writing challenge as well.

And it's just the right thing to do to help folks who rely on it.

Big news: I’m happy to share that yesterday I started a new job at Microsoft where I'll be working on web components for Fluent UI.

I've had a long relationship with Microsoft – from Paravel helping to build the first responsive version of their homepage in 2012 to the whole 5 year "" stunt that Rey Bango coordinated for ShopTalk – and this feels like a nice new chapter in that story arc.

The best part about the London mayoral election? That the massively racist party (Britain First) are so unpopular that they were beaten by a man with a bin on his head (Count Binface).

If we switch a house from an electric hot water heater to a heat pump, we’ll save about 7.5kWh per day.

If we put that much energy into an EV, it’ll recharge it for about 45km of travel.

That’s more than the average car drives each day in Australia.

Upshot: Your hot water may use more energy than driving an EV would, the extra energy needed from the grid for EVs is not necessarily a step change, and the grid may be fine as-is if we reduce the use of inefficient electric appliances.

(REHW daily energy = ~10kWh, HPHW efficiency = ~400%, EV mileage = ~6km/kWh, average daily drive = ~35km)

React 19 Beta is here, and finally has better support for HTML custom elements: https://react.dev/blog/2024/04/25/react-19#whats-new-in-react-19

"React 19 adds full support for custom elements and passes all tests on Custom Elements Everywhere."

This is a big deal for Web Component-powered design systems. We've had to create/manage a special React-specific wrapper layer for a long time to deal with React's (mis)handling of custom elements. Other frameworks Just Work w Web Components, so I'm glad React is joining the club
