Tonight's menu: cheap beer chicken! (With BBQ sauce). Since I don't think the slug traps are working as intended, and don't think the backyard Wood Rat should be wandeing around drunk the whole week. #BBQ #chicken

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr we do beercan chicken sliiiiightly differently, but to great effect:

  • butter + peri perri under and over the skin
  • use apple cider, orange juice or pineapple juice instead of beer
  • use a probe, cook til internal temp is 155

i dare you to not devour it before it actually comes off its stand onto plates

A new unit is $180 to $350 depending on who you buy it from (why the difference, I do not know). A new battery, bought locally (Batteries Plus) was pricey, at almost $70... but having been bitten by a large number of either counterfeit or fake batteries at Uncle Jeff's Online Emporium (Amazon), I have switched to local purchases until someone here can suggest a better alternative....

NY Times: Personal Conflicts, Even Violence, Are Not Uncommon in Long-Term Care

Arguments, verbal abuse and aggression are not unusual in elder care settings. Better staffing and training can ease the tensions, experts say.

Wood Rat: Stay out all night! Drink lots of free beer! Eat a slug or two! What else would you do?!

**technically, this is a slug trap for the garden. Practically, it is an all night (and day?) bar for the Wood Rat that lives in my backyard. (the Dusky Footed Woodrat, Neotoma fuscipes -- native of Southern California -- also known as the "pack rat")

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

If you're wondering where the loose change you dropped on your back patio is... likely it's back in the pack rat midden...

From the NWF: "Members of the genus Neotoma are also called packrats because they have a tendency to hoard things, especially shiny objects left out by humans. Woodrats are also called “trade rats,” because when they come across a new treasure, they’ll drop whatever they’re carrying in order to pick up the new item, effectively trading one token for the other. WARNING: Turning off Google's risky "Find My Device" network on your devices is a dark pattern mess.

I previously noted why I recommended you NOT participate in Google's new "Find My Device" network. Despite their claims of anonymity and encryption, there's just too much that can go wrong, especially with #Google making so many unforced errors under their current management. Of course it's your choice.

#Google had sent out a warning email that FYD would be enabled soon on Android devices associated with the Google Account, and offered a link where you could go to opt-out (yes, you're in by default). The email claimed this would disable FYD on all Android devices associated with the account.

This is not the case, at least for me. Despite my actions taken in response to the email, my devices' settings are now showing that they are enabled for FYD, and I've had to manually disable this. Does this really work? I don't know.

What I DO know is that the Help pages associated with this go on and on and on with complicated verbiage about different FYD modes and activities that seem clearly designed to cause the reader to not bother trying to read it, much less understand it.

Obviously, Google really, really wants you participating in this new location sharing effort, which given their history in this regard is not at all reassuring.

But it's so very Google these days. Yet another disappointment.

I've come for you, the vulture does say,
As they do in that Edgar Allen Poe way,
I'll sit right here and wait for some lunch,
On your rotting bones and flesh shall I munch
Oh wait, I'm wrong and you're not dying alone?
That smell's just your brand new cologne?

** not sure what the vulture smells... probably something dead there on the hill. I hope not smelling the demise of a neighbor. (When my last dog was dying -- literally on her last legs, dying of old age -- about 7 vultures showed up in the backyard the day we ended up taking her to the vet to give her a humane end. They knew the end was near. )

It's a slug party,
and I've bought them all a beer
Let's invite them to come right over,
and have a great cheer
It was the cheapest beer they sell nearby
But for a party it will fly
The question is really,
Will they just get drunk, or die?

Official count of beer drowned slugs: zero.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

Wood rats eat slugs! Apparently, beer marinated slugs taste good! After the drunk slugs stumbled away from the bar, the wood rat got the muchies from all the beer earlier and appears to have eaten as many beer marinated slugs as possible! Slug beer traps work! #wildlife #beer #slugsn

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

So, the conclusion here is:

Beer Traps Work*

But not in the way you think, at least in my experiment (sample size n=1).

The beer attracts slugs, and saw dozens of slugs climb INTO the slug trap, drink beer, and leave much fatter.

The wood rat in the backyard (after swigging a bunch of beer itself) then ATE a bunch of those slugs... must have spent 15 minutes finding all the beer filled slugs and tearing them to bits and eating them.

So, the slugs are dead... but not DIRECTLY through the beer.

If the Microsoft Windows 11 PC (which I am forced to use for client/work) is any proof, every Microsoft AI feature added to the OS is subtracting 15-20% of the productivity from your employees. 🙄

@ai6yr New nag from Microsoft to upgrade to Win 11 : It's time to upgrade your PC before end of suppport which they say arrives Oct 14 2025 - which they say means no tech support (that's fine) or SECURITY UPDATES (boooo!) after that date.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

video/mp4

GossiTheDog, (edited )
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

Turns out speaking out works.

Microsoft are making significant changes to Recall, including making it specifically opt in, requiring Windows Hello face scanning to activate and use it, and actually encrypting the database.

There are obviously going to be devils in the details - potentially big ones.

Microsoft needs to commit to not trying to sneak users to enable it in the future, and it needs turning off by default in Group Policy and Intune for enterprise orgs.
