A movie I completely missed when it was released and only watched for the first time last night...

John Carter (2012)

What should have been a major film, arrived and quietly disappeared at the time.

I had no idea it was based on a book series by Edgar Rice Burrough. Also I had no idea it mostly takes place on Mars.

Apparently the source material has been referential for other major sci-fi and adventure films.

It's a story about a Civil War Confederate Captain, who while searching for gold, is transported to Mars, where he encounters alien species, a princess, and a plot to manipulate control of the planet. Meanwhile he discovers he has increased strength and ability to jump great distances while on Mars.

It's not a bad film, and was surprisingly more entertaining than I expected. There are some good moments. By the way, it's also a love story.

Stars Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Ciarán Hinds, Dominic West, James Purefoy. and Willem Dafoe

I don't understand what's happening to the RNC and worse yet, why no one in the party seems to be voicing concern. People are okay with what appears to be the foundation for setting up a dictatorship... install your family everywhere and your close allies.

I thought this was a tool for business contacts.

When did LinkedIn become Facebook?

What are the chances of me ever interacting with Ryan Reynolds in a business capacity? 🤔

Has anyone done a feature and side by side comparison of Bluesky and Mastodon? Each has really cool unique features - I wish I could just combine the two

Starcade,
@Starcade@sfba.social avatar

@hryb

I received an invite code six months ago to Bluesky, and am shocked to discover that it's still invite only. That to me is a turn off-- however, I signed up today out of curiosity. Mastodon, for me, has been quite enjoyable since joining over a year ago. I would admit though, finding people on Mastodon is a bit more of a chore than it should be AND the whole decentralized concept does add complications. I had friends on alternate Mastodon servers that stopped operating. Those that moved to other servers, had to be re-followed. Some just disappeared.

I noticed something about...

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour movie.

When it was first released in theaters, there were NO matinee showings. Basically they were maximizing returns. I had never seen that happen before.

Now it's available to stream, however, you can't buy it, you can only rent, and it's commanding a premium $19.89 Again, maximizing returns. I've never seen a new movie released that you could ONLY rent.

I'm not liking the precedent.

For me, I wouldn't buy until it becomes reasonable.

Eight Men Out (1988)

Seen this movie for the umpteenth time. It's the story of the White Sox as they head to and compete in the 1919 World Series and the scandalous aftermath.

Apparently it didn't do well upon release, and the reviews state if you're not a fan of baseball, you probably wouldn't like this film- however I disagree. I'm not huge fan of baseball, but I love this film.

Stars John Cusack, David Strathairn, Michael Rooker, D. B. Sweeney, John Mahoney, Clifton James, Michael Lerner, Christopher Lloyd, and Charlie Sheen

There's something wrong with Twitter.

I have an account with no tweets, that's only following friends.

Every day I managed to pick up fake followers-- whom I block as I don't know them.

I'm noticing more and more tweets in my feed that I'm not interested in following. In fact, I removed all interests from my profile. Yet I keep seeing odd content appear.

I'm seeing patterns of the same tweets by different accounts. I've tried blocking the accounts, yet the same content continues to appear. I block again, same content shows up.

There's a LOT of misinformation that's being tweeted en masse

I suspect there's an increase in number of accounts that are not fronted by a person that are pushing content.

We're also operating an IBM z/Series mainframe

I've been using a pre-release of the new version for a couple of months now and it's MUCH better than the prior version. Also, it should be noted that prior version had a security flaw, so it's worth upgrading to the latest release.

We're about a week or so away from a presumable price drop as we transition to the blend everyone else is using, however, I'm assuming our pricing will remain elevated (likely in the $5 range) for the remainder of the year.

Microsoft will stop accepting new third-party print drivers in Windows

Universal standards for print and scan drivers have become more popular.

Starcade,
@Starcade@sfba.social avatar

@arstechnica

Saw this yesterday. What I'm wondering-- how will this impact business users? I doubt it would be an issue for most home users.

We have legacy systems using their own printing systems, such as one with it's own driver to print checks that validates authorization over the internet. Another is enterprise application we haven't upgraded in years as it's too costly to upgrade, but it has it's own drivers. Lastly, we have a copier infrastructure that uses a system to print anywhere securely.

As far as I can tell, it says you can STILL install third party drivers.

So maybe it's much ado about nothing-- other than they'll be a universal driver at some point.

I watched The Andromeda Strain a film I had never previously seen, but recall hearing about the book from a friend. The movie was released i 1971 and was directed by Robert Wise, based on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name. A satellite crashes in a small isolated town, and mysteriously almost wipes out all the inhabitants. A military team is sent in to retrieve the satellite, and contact is lost with them. The rest of the movie is spent trying to determine what happened by studying the satellite and it's contents at a secure underground location. It's basically about a bio-hazard, and seems somewhat timely., although the movie itself is dated, yet still feels compelling. I found it interesting that the special effects were done by Douglas Trumbull, who later worked with Wise on Star Trek the Motion Picture. Kind of wish Trumbull had worked on more films. #movies
