Rebuilt Microsoft Teams app promises twice the speed and half the RAM usage

Microsoft dumps Electron framework for its own Edge WebView2 backend.

circuit10,

@arstechnica Is this really going to be much faster? It’s still Chromium underneath. I guess there can be a bit more resource sharing though

@arstechnica is it just my deja-vu or is this like the second or third time they claim this? Everytime it just get’s worse.

nostradamnit,

@arstechnica Look for an updated Linux version that won't be any better in a couple of years, maybe... yeah.

@arstechnica So now my work chat client will only consume half a gigabyte of RAM? 😂

jarthur,

@arstechnica I ran this and it not only used literally TWICE the ram as old teams, but it ran half as slow, and the video chat didn’t work at all.

@arstechnica

I've been using a pre-release of the new version for a couple of months now and it's MUCH better than the prior version. Also, it should be noted that prior version had a security flaw, so it's worth upgrading to the latest release.

@arstechnica I installed the new version on my MacBook today. It’s so much better. TIP: You can uninstall your old teams first, then install the new Teams package for a cleaner install. It also removes the switch at the top.

@arstechnica Uuughhhh just build native apps already.

YurkshireLad,

@arstechnica how about being sensible and make it a native app, not one built on a web browser. Lordy lordy.

@arstechnica ok, but is there a linux version?

@arstechnica updated it on my Mac and indeed it feels way snappier. Especially after I disabled the animations - whatever that means cause I didn’t notice any difference from that standpoint 😆
Hope that now it will not stop responding to clicks every now and then like it did for years before 🫠

richie,

@arstechnica ...or they could just have used Skype. 🤷‍♂️

Or, and this is a novel concept, I know, actually add useful functionality instead of novelties?

Like supporting more than one work account so not half of my calls go to my phone?

NovemberMan,

@arstechnica but will it work?

@arstechnica
"Rebuilt Microsoft Teams app promises twice the speed and half the RAM usage" this will be nice since Teams is clunky & slow on my work laptop & makes everything malfunction if I'm on a video or screen sharing call. Ie. It's terrible. It didn't lock the laptop up 3 years ago, so either they've bloated it more or work's "endpoint protection" is more intrusive.

@arstechnica great, another hack of an app.

Regardless, I'll never use it.

db_erik,

@arstechnica I love that we're still circling around dependency issues in 2023. Money quote:

"Macs don't benefit quite as much from the new app since, unlike Windows, they don't have any of the Edge WebView2 files built-in—a WebView2 app on macOS is a lot like an Electron app, in that it includes its own dependencies and needs to update them separately from other WebView2 apps on the same system."

@arstechnica Um... Yay? Ish?

It's still a steaming heap that most people don't voluntarily use, unless it's foisted upon them by their company.

  • NosirrahSec,

    @kevbob @arstechnica you mean your 5 year-old hardware struggles to keep up with modern software?

    Weird.

    I've never experienced this.

    jsiulian,

    @NosirrahSec @kevbob @arstechnica Modern meaning that uses as many resources as some operating systems for displaying a chat?

  • jsiulian,

    @kevbob @NosirrahSec @arstechnica To be fair, I don't experience a lot of crashes, but it is still a piece of junk. Zoom is light years away

    @arstechnica … and yet still building apps on top of web browsers.

    Good work, everyone!
