Mastodon, eh?
Middle-aged, cis-het white guy; my experience has been that the more we amplify the voices of those who don't fall neatly into those categories, the better. So that's what I try to do.
FYI: if I see you scolding someone for mastodonning wrong (i.e., "We don't do threads on Mastodon!" "You need to tag your b/w photos as colorless!" "This discussion of racism needs to be hidden behind a content warning!") I will block you.

I could need a bit of help regarding an old US movie which I cannot remember the title of.

It is a about a couple, probably set in the 1950s and black and white, which goes on their honeymoon in the US with a caravan. Everything goes wrong and I remember that at one point, the caravan comes off from the car and roles down a hill, I think with the bride still inside.

Hint: I don't think it's this movie:

Thanks!

@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@HistoPol Not B&W, but this is what immediately came to mind for me...

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@HistoPol I had an inkling! (Can't imagine seeing Lucy Ball in something & not remembering she was in it...)

Could have sworn there was a Spencer Tracy/Katherine Hepburn flick that had a similar plot, but a quick IMDB search didn't turn up anything for either... (I also checked all of the likely suspects I could think of for romantic comedies of the 50s - no joy there, either)

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@HistoPol Hmm. What do you remember about the make of the caravan/trailer? (Complicating the search, obviously, is that the term used in the US is "trailer", which makes it hard to search for a movie about a "trailer", because Google wants to show you trailers for movies, not trailers that you hook up to your truck or whatever...)

Was it Airstream-looking, or more like a trolley car?

I read the jury instructions.

With the disclaimer that this is absolutely not a prediction of what the jury will do, not much in the jury instructions change what I had to say here:

https://terikanefield.com/wheres-the-beef-trumps-manhattan-criminal-case-and-some-mind-bending-legal-puzzles/

I wrote about predicate crimes for predicate crimes.

The predicate crime for falsification of business records is
NEW YORK ELECTION LAW § 17-152 PREDICATE.

The jury gets three possible predicate crimes for 17-152.

1/

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@MillardPhillmore @Teri_Kanefield That was my (initial, non-lawyer) thought as well - that the detour increases the number of routes that any individual juror can take to get to the prosecution's desired destination of guilty.

EDIT: That is, the prosecution's theory is that a) Trump et al. falsified business records re Cohen's reimbursement -> b) with the purpose of corruptly interfering with an election -> c) by 1) FECA viol 2) tax viol and/or 3) falsifying the records re Stormy's payoff

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@MillardPhillmore @Teri_Kanefield + and that the result of the detour through the 'corruptly interfering with an election' bit means that The People don't need to get 12 jurors to unanimously agree that c) 1, 2 or 3 happened; we could have 3 jurors thinking all 3 happened, 6 thinking that c) 1 & 3 happened, and 3 thinking that just c) 3 happened. (Or whatever)

But since Trump wasn't charged with c) 1, 2 or 3, The People don't need to worry about proof beyond a reasonable doubt on any of those.

We got all the furniture into the POD and now have to pack what's remaining in the kitchen. So things are a little messy

Our twins are down from Canada helping, & their dear friend is here for the night from San Diego, to see them. We adore her. But it's a little chaotic

At 4:30 am we get a text--coincidentally we're awake--from our pal/realtor! We'd missed her earlier text, we have a showing today at 12:30. Oy. & why was SHE up?

Every Black rapper has a political opinion. Every single one. But you only hear about the political opinions of the ones that support Trump. 🤷🏿‍♂️

Because that's what US news, which is tuned for white eyes, pushes.

Many white Dems and white GOP folk genuinely believe that Black folk only vote for Black folk, and that Black folk blindly vote for whoever a Black celebrity tells them to vote for. They're genuinely surprised when Black folk don't vote for Kanyes or Hershels or Tim Scotts. Every time.

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Which is absurd, really, because there literally isn't a demographic in the USA that has more experience with picking the least awful of the available options, than Black voters, for as long as there have been Black voters here.

See, e.g., the re-election of John Lindsay as mayor of NYC in 1969.

I once read that the show Baywatch (1989 - 2001) was greenlit via a video montage of girls in swimsuits on a beach while Don Henley's hit "Boys of Summer" played.

I don't really have anything to say about that other than that I think it makes perfect sense.

Still gotta do some fixes on indexes in the database but at least all is running smooth again :blobhappy:

Why are people surprised that cassettes are still made?

It should be obvious why they’re still around.

Cassettes are the cheapest form of music media out there. Anyone can buy one blank cassette and start recording. Equipment is cheap: all you need is a boombox.

If you want good analog recording, you can use them on a Tascam Portastudio 4-track machine—and it will sound great.

I went to a music store the other day and saw the same album on vinyl, CD, and cassette. Guess which one I bought?

It was the cassette. It was C$12—thus C$28 cheaper than the vinyl.

Here’s the kicker. If you have a good tape deck, and a quality recording, cassettes can sound better than vinyl. Even a type 1 cassette theoretically has better dynamic range than vinyl.

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@atomicpoet Yah. 'Tis true.

I think audio cassettes got a bad rap when the transition to CDs was happening, because when the labels went all-in on CDs, they treated other formats as after-thoughts, and simply pressed vinyl & mass-produced cassettes from the masters that were optimized for CD.

Which.

Well, bigger audio nerds than I can tell you why that's bad.
Mind, tape ain't perfect! It doesn't last forever! But brother, if you believe that those CD-Rs you burned in 1998 will last forever...

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@upmultimedia @atomicpoet See, I'm not sure it is - here's why

Any analog recording/playback device is going to require care/maintenance. (My buddy who's /way/ into vinyl has an array of brushes & sprays & devices that come out every time he puts a platter on the turntable. It sounds amazing! And it looks exhausting!

For tape, you need to periodically get out the isopropyl & special lint-free swabs to clean the heads - a chore, but the median well-maintained tape deck > average turntable.

The problem with having such a complicated audio set-up is that it takes ages to figure out what’s wrong. Seriously, here’s my chain:

  1. Computer
  2. USB cable
  3. DAC
  4. RCA cable
  5. Receiver
  6. Speaker wire
  7. Speaker

I totally understand why some people would rather just do Bluetooth instead. However, I have this weird obsession with HiFi.

RufusJCooter,
@RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

@atomicpoet I've simplified my set-up a bunch by running HDMI from my computer to the TV, then running RCA out from there to the receiver

    Listen, if you’re a white person, and you think you’ve had Szechuan food, you probably haven’t.

    Most of the Szechuan restaurants in the USA lack a basic component: spiciness.

    I say this because a friend from out of town just went to a Szechuan restaurant in Vancouver, thought it was going to be business as usual, and now he’s doubled over because the spice is too much for him.

    He tells me, it’s so bad, that he feels the spice eking out of his pores. 🤣

    RufusJCooter,
    @RufusJCooter@mstdn.social avatar

    @adnan @atomicpoet Well, the thing is, it's not just that different spices are different.

    It's that spices get processed by your system in the context of the other things that it's concurrently processing.

    You're (probably?) not eating raw green chilies on their own, w/o any other spices or ingredients alongside? Like, chicken, or rice, or [whatever]?
