It's the start of a long weekend and I've found myself with a backlog of links, so it's time for another linkdump - the eighteenth in the (occasional) series. Here's the previous installments:

MUST WATCH:

"The dream in the USA of 'electric SUVs for all' rests on the back of extraction from the mines of Congo and from the bodies of Congolese workers who are supposed to bear the brunt of that Dream. This is not a viable future."— @jasonhickel

@peterdutoit I feel this is more useful than the 'EVs bad because Cobalt mining' argument. We should have ethical standards for all supply chains regardless of how much or how little of it we use. The 'West' shafted African nations under colonialism and then left them in disarray when colonialism became unfashionable/unprofitable. EVs aren't the problem, its the colonial legacy.

Forcing people to use Facebook (or other proprietary monopolistic corporations) to get updates on essential services should be illegal.
Luckily I'm offgrid and so I'm just looking as a tourist but the point stands. Grrrrrrrrrr.

    A while back I stuck some googly eyes on some fish & was annoyed because it was a rubbish loop & a bit slapdash even for me, so I got another clip & have sporadically been adding more googly eyes.

    Decided it was done & generated the new file.

    Downside: The loop is worse & overall the new clip looks just the same.

    Upside: I think I've discovered a new form of adding-googly-eyes-to-moving-fish therapy. Surprisingly relaxing. Would recommend.

    A video clip of a dark aquarium tank with many fish, all the same kind, swimming back and forth. Quite a lot of them have had a set of googly eyes and an open O mouth added.

    I've been rewatching some of my old videos for something I'm working on and wow ... they are boring as hell. I can't believe that my channel ever took off with these early snoozefest videos.

    Even I need to watch them at 2x speed, and I made them!!

    This one in particular, I remember being "emotional" and "edgy". Uh ... no. It's slow and monotone.

    They're all like this. In fact, this one is better than most.

    https://youtu.be/Ra_0DgnJ1uQ

    Niall,
    @Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

    @notjustbikes you had a bunch of PSA information to convey in your early ones which is easier to deliver emotion-free.
    Then you started passing opinion which is naturally something emotive.
    I like your earlier stuff because when trying to get 'the others' to understand an issue emotion is often inflammatory and not helpful.
    So get boring again you damn American! What? Oh, I'm sorry, I mean technically you're from North America so I don't see any problem here ;-P

    @Rjdlandscapes@mastodon.nz avatar

    OK wow. really don't understand or tech

    Niall,
    @Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

    @Rjdlandscapes @ge0rg to be fair that's how the prius works and there's not millions of them in the sea, canals or ponds. It's just really hard to beat the average idiot.

    Niall,
    @Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

    @ge0rg @Rjdlandscapes unintended acceleration is a different and horrible issue for which Toyota needs a spanking.
    The prius & by the sounds of it this new ev of theirs behaves like a conventional auto but is silent like an ev. You can get out with it in D (just like almost every auto car ever) and it will roll off. That's not the fault of the car or Toyota doing something whacky. My Leaf is the same.
    Toyota, like most corps, has many horrific issues but I don't think this issue is one of them.

    Niall,
    @Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

    @Rjdlandscapes @ge0rg I disagree. every automatic car up until a few very recently behave this way. There are literally tens of millions of hybrid(therefore silent at parking speed) Toyota out there like this.
    My Tesla and my byd automatically panic and go into park if you've got the door open and you raise your butt slightly. They pi$$ me off constantly. Backing with the door open to check clearances is nearly impossible. Give me control over my machine please!

    Niall,
    @Niall@mastodon.nz avatar

    @Rjdlandscapes @ge0rg yes I know it has mirrors and cameras :-P I guess you don't spend much time putting them on trailers or lining them up precisely to marks on workshop floors, both activities where the cameras & mirrors are of limited use.
    My point is that there are millions and millions of cars out there without this interlock and that you are kicking Toyota for something unrelated to it being an EV.
