The Last Rose of Summer is a true story about corruption in #cancer research. I discovered a cheap, plant-derived drug that could replace some much more toxic (but more lucrative) therapies. #BigPharma got involved and suppressed the research. Eventually I had to publish the story in thinly veiled fiction and survive a bunch of murder attempts.

"Mary Austin" is a pseudonym, as my publisher forced me to use one. So... hi, I'm "Mary." 🤷‍♀️

People should realize how great it feels to free yourself from scumbag artists and athletes. It was really tough, having been raised a football fan, to give up the NFL, but that was 15-20 years ago and I have never felt anything but relief. Every revolting scandal-- the racism, the rape, the treatment of CTE-- not my issue. Seeing how much better life was without the bullcrap made it easier to make right decisions later.

It's tough at first, but you get the hang of it!

@StillIRise1963 My dad played in high school, my mom was a cheerleader, they were die hard fans of the NFL for decades and even they called it quits. They took a few more years than I did, but they are done.

None of us ever turned our backs even when our team was garbage on the field, but if they're going to be garbage as people in that league (most especially in the front offices) they don't deserve our money or loyalty.

I remember seeing this meme during 2020. For anyone who doesn't remember, this is Lina Hidalgo, the top elected official of the county that Houston is in. She was fighting back against the state government to have covid control measures in Houston for reasons obvious to any non-brain dead person with a conscience.

Looks like she's still there cleaning up Abbott's messes as best she can. I don't know how she does it.

Weather and climate change aren’t the same thing, but climate change is creating extremes.

Despite this, Ron DeSantis (R) just signed a law deleting climate change from Florida policy, banning the construction of offshore wind turbines, and boosting fossil fuels.

DeSantis isn’t in the running anymore for President but Trump is and his plan for addressing the climate is if anything worse.

We already did this experiment. RWNJ's were accusing Joe Biden of causing the 2021 ice storm in Texas, rather than admit that climate change is causing extreme storms and their state Republicans failed them utterly.

Saw one recently that began "If you block me, I win" and continued with a bunch of statements to the effect that it's everybody else's fault he's an asshole.

I was only looking at his profile because he made a totally ridiculous, unreasonable response to someone else and I figured he was there for no reason but to try to make people mad.

Sadly, though I blocked him, he will probably never get to notice and treasure his victory.

Young people generally do believe in a higher power. To their credit, they do not believe in hatred, greed, or hypocrisy. Those raised in hateful churches are looking for another way to connect with the divine.

Good for them for grasping what is most important for that journey: love for others. They may feel lost, but they are going in the right direction by leaving places that basically worship white cis het identity.

I have nachos. They are SO TOO HOT and I'm pretty sure I just scalded my lip.

But, I have ~3k of words so far and I feel like they are pretty "tight". Definitely need some editing and obviously I'll need to play with word choices a bit but I am happy with pacing and discovery so far. About to get into the magicy stuff so it'll be cool to play in that lane a bit.

Dialog is always hard. Why can't all the voices in my head (stories, just stories) be more consistent and just... wordy like me? :D

For me the one silver lining to the nightmare we are living in, is how right I realize I was my entire life. Every place, every relationship, from childhood to my thirties, all the people I could not fucking believe became Trumpers. All the "conventional wisdom" I could never wrap my head around has been revealed plainly as worthless rationalization of amoral behavior. All the anxiety and despair I felt was, tragically, completely warranted.

God does it suck to be right.

Really, really torn about Sideshow Bob and brain worms because parasitic brain infections are an actual thing that happens to decent people around the world, and when it happens to them it is tragic.

Much tougher to feel sorry for a person so totally lacking in compassion, who is a threat to our country, and who may or may not have even really experienced this. Who knows what the hell is going on with that guy?

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

I grew up in the country so I have a theory that "when the crap hits the fan" came from dairy farms. I have no evidence for this except that dairy barns do indeed have giant fans and animals who poop pretty indiscriminately. My imagination considers this pretty strong evidence.
