    "'For you' isn't." (by me!)

    “For you”, “home”, "popular", etc. Are often friendly-sounding ways of saying “not what you signed up for”. When we scroll algorithmically-sorted feeds with ads and inserted content, we are surrendering control over our own sense of reality to for-profit big tech companies.

    's own study demonstrated that chronological feeds are less addictive. Thankfully apps like @Mastodon and readers exist that grant us control again.

    Missed this while traveling: Just SUPERB by @yoyoel illustrating the impossible nuances of moderating humans. He proposes an ombuds model over legalism. Good idea. I also imagine a bartender model: consistent but flexible authority.

    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @jeffjarvis @yoyoel A "bartender" model implies a space small enough for the bartender to see everything going on. Not something achievable when a platform prioritizes growth for growth's sake.

    Just got hit with:

    "But can you prove ChatGPT is not intelligent in the human sense?"

    Oh my that old chestnut. 🙄

    I am not making a claim, I am merely rejecting somebody else's claim that ChatGPT is intelligent in the human sense.

    The burden of proof is on whoever claims that ChatGPT is intelligent in the human sense. That proof would also need to be accompanied by a clear, unambiguous, testable definition of what "intelligent" means, that ideally includes humans but excludes calculators.

    JustinH,
    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @rysiek 💯 The worst is when people try to "prove" it by saying we can't prove human sentience either. Stringing words together that sound smart to people is not the same thing as stringing words together that actually MEAN anything.

    I've written about this at length before, I'm starting to wonder if the tech bros have sentience themselves...

    I buy the take that a goal of buying Twitter was to stop progressive movements that were organizing there.

    These movements were and are changing the world for the better.

    The fediverse needs to be built to be their forever home: a place to join together across borders to make the world better for everyone, with equal opportunities for all.

    I still, despite everything, after all this time, believe this is the promise of the internet.

    #ThreadsNews July 21, 2023

    So, this is a big problem!

    Media Matters: #Meta is still allowing misinformation and hate speech to proliferate on Threads >>> https://www.mediamatters.org/facebook/meta-still-allowing-misinformation-and-hate-speech-proliferate-threads

    "#Threads still isn’t enforcing the hate speech policies that govern Instagram, allowing users to post anti-LGBTQ, racist, and anti-immigrant rhetoric"

    The article lists many of examples of unmoderated anti-immigrant, xenophobic, anti-LGBTQ hate speech, plus right wing baseless political attacks, and misinformation.

    One suggestion: If you want the fedi to be a welcoming place, don't jump in to someone's mentions to explain the fedi UNLESS explicitly asked to do so.

    "But...."

    But nothing. This place will survive a little technical misunderstanding or misstatement.

    It will not survive newcomers being bombarded with endless fedisplaining.

    JustinH,
    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @design_law I think the best feature of decentralized social media is that anyone can envision their own version and build it easily. It's easy to imagine someone (who's passionate enough about it), building say- "FediNoobs.social" with welcoming policies like this. Kinda like AOL was for email back in the day. It's one thing to have instances that ban Nazis but as it all grows I think we'll see more specialized places with clear goals for the types of constructive conversation they want most.

    erlend, to bluesky
    @erlend@writing.exchange avatar

    In light of growing moderation challenges at both #BlueSky and #Threads , here’s a @pluralistic classic:

    https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/04/pick-all-three/

    > The Moderator's Trilemma goes, "Large, diverse userbase; centralized platforms; don't anger users – pick any two."

    > Rozenshtein proposes a solution: federation. De-siloing social media, breaking it out of centralized walled gardens and recomposing it as a bunch of small servers run by a diversity of operators with a diversity of content moderation approaches.

    JustinH,
    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @erlend @pluralistic I think about this essay a lot, I think the reason that "social media" has largely been moving away from the "social" and towards the "media" is because users won't get angry en-masse if a platform is specifically oriented around memes and short videos, allowing platforms to get massive (like TikTok).

    There's just no money in constructive conversation (and that's probably a good thing for the Fediverse in general).

    "Threads is a New Mall" (by me!)

    Now that is here, I have a strong feeling we're going to be seeing more attempts to paint Mastodon as "uncool". When corporations can't fight something with money, their only hope is to discourage it via culture. The Fediverse is an existential threat to Meta and they know it. Remember Google's "No Moat" memo? "Open source is eating our lunch".

    lauren, to Futurology
    @lauren@mastodon.laurenweinstein.org avatar

    It's almost as if declared that they'd federate as a way to get the "fediverse" crowd not to bitch about Meta/Facebook/Zuck's horrific past abuses of privacy and other data abuses, and the fact that the Threads app has quite possibly the most invasive set of anti-privacy demands of any app in history. Almost like Meta thinks the fediverse gang are all suckers.

    JustinH,
    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @lauren yeah, personally I'm skeptical it will ever happen. It seems like integrating ActivityPub into Threads will be a lot of work to please the sorts of people who:

    A) Probably wouldn't be swayed by it anyway
    B) Aren't as likely to click on many ads.

    I can't help but wonder if all the talk of ActivityPub integration was simply to avoid wholly contemptuous press from the people most qualified to give it.

    I predict that what will happen to is the same thing that is happening to Twitter and has already happened to Facebook and frankly, actual shopping malls. The business side of things will churn along divorced from the content which will become ever more generic and culturally irrelevant.

    Don’t kid yourself. “Artificial intelligence“ is just Big Tech’s way of saying “hey, it’s not our fault. It’s the machine’s!“ In point of fact, every malign use of “AI“ is really just some human-composed algorithm doing something that maximizes profit or control at the expense of people. We must not let these companies off the hook. They’re in charge. Not the machine. Pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

    JustinH,
    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @leo Preach! We're seeing the "paperclip problem" play out digitally. Instead of physical paperclips, they told the machines "maximize the profits". The algorithms figured out that it's much easier to extract money from people who are perpetually distracted and anxious.

    Not that I was very interested in BlueSky to begin with, but this is a really good breakdown by @rysiek on why it's decentralized in name only:

    https://rys.io/en/167.html

    What I don't really understand is what the sales pitch from BS actually is for anyone to run an instance of their own?

    JustinH,
    @JustinH@twit.social avatar

    @rysiek Yeah, that's the only reason I can think of too. It's so unlike Dorsey to muddy the waters of knowledge in order to benefit himself... 🙄
