Well that update was a bit rough. I thought it was bricked for a while there 😬

jQuery plugins depended on jQuery, and when jQuery went out of favor, they ended up in the junkyard.

There is all sorts of componentry built exclusively on React, limiting it to React-based sites. As React goes out of favor, they will end up in the junkyard. (Same with any framework-specific extension.)

But with Web Components... it seems like the story will end differently. If they are built without dependencies, they might just live as long as the web does.

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@cferdinandi @chriscoyier Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I see web components as having the power for both strategies. Dependency heavy components for ephemeral, fast moving projects and progressively enhanced ones for longevity, but with the benefit of a (mostly) common syntax/ergonomics in either situation.

@rachelnabors It definitely took me a few years to realise that I'm often perceived more positively if I just say yes to whatever bonkers idea my boss has and let them deal with the fallout later instead of trying to improve upon it upfront.

Intersectionality is such an important concept. You can have different aspects of privilege and oppression, trauma in different areas. They don't cancel each other out, they interact. It's important to be aware of them

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@joelanman My heritage is mostly Anglo-Indian, so a mix of an oppressor and the oppressed. It's kinda messy when I think about the implications of the history there.

@yosh Mashing confit garlic with miso, butter/olive oil and herbs is my favourite way to make garlic bread.

javascript people: does anyone have a date/time library they prefer for heavy lifting? I’ve gotten frustrated enough with Luxon (successor to Moment) to move on

I need to be able to do some heavy lifting with this, almost but not quite on the scale of what joda-time / java 8’s time library allows. I don’t need custom chronologies or calendars, but do need a library that doesn’t constantly patronize me by thinking it knows more about my use cases than I do

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@mattly We used spacetime for a delivery cutoff timer thing a while ago and it seemed inoffensive enough. I haven't used it but day.js purports to have the same api as moment.

I've really enjoyed doing Japanese Duolingo for nearly a year now (350 days), but it's at the level where I can rarely read the Japanese and I'm making pattern matches guesses at answers.

I really want to (and probably will) reset my progress and go back to the first levels to get the fundamentals really cooked in.

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@rem I ended up giving up on Finnish after a few months. Repeatedly guessing and failing with no explanation isn't a great motivator for me, I think I need to find a more explanatory course.

I was listening to @shoptalkshow this morning and @davatron5000 shared a story about one live coding interview that just didn’t go well, and it was highly relatable to an experience I had too. I thought it was great that he shared it because it happens and it can be easy to feel like it’s a reflection of how you really are at work, but it’s often about something else entirely, and your next call might go great! Anyway, thanks Dave and congrats on the big new gig!

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@scottjehl @shoptalkshow That sounded painful and relatable. I've always blanked in tests, day to day practical application I'm fine with but something about the standard academic process just never worked for me. So yeah, thanks for sharing @davatron5000

@mrtrimble @hi_mayank I remember being surprised early in my career when I discovered that super smart back-end devs produced horrendous front-end code and with zero thought to basic design principles. Job titles might have changed but I'm still seeing the same thing now.

PSA for my fellow #WebDevs:

If you ever get the "offer" to work with #Shopware 6, run. Run as fast as you can. There is nothing out there that is more of a developer nightmare than this pile of junk.

95% of my gray hair comes only from Shopware.

@kaiserkiwi You have my sympathy, I've done a lot of Shopware 5 but managed to avoid 6.

Jbasoo,

@kaiserkiwi Yeah that's what I heard. We did 1 project with it and dropped it. I'm doing more Shopify lately which is nice after years of Magento, Shopware and BigCommerce.

Jbasoo,

@michael Yeah if you can get away with lower speeds it's not too bad. With my wife and I working remotely we need faster speeds than the alternatives provide, which means I need to keep negotiating on renewal (which I hate doing)

@andycarolan I'm gonna say gourmet baked beans. On a related note, I was recently in Macedonia and was eating this bean dish at every opportunity. https://www.196flavors.com/macedonia-tavce-gravce/
