Construction workers and software developers have a few things in common:

  • ⏰ ”This should take only a few hours" is a dangerous phrase in both professions.
  • ☕️ They both know the power of a good cup of coffee. and the occasional desperate need for a complete rebuild.
  • ❤️ Both love making things people rely on. One creates physical structures, the other the structures that power our digital world.

@daniel_js_craft a friend of mine is an electrician and it's remarkable how similar our work complaints are. Spending hours/days tracking down a problem multiple levels deep, trying to fix someone else's bad work, clients not understanding the complexity of their requests etc. At least I don't have to deal with my work potentially killing people!

Android users! Do you use any “file manager” type app on your Android device?

@wolfr yep, either the one that came with my phone or Google files

I am curious about something.

Regardless of your "generation" (Baby Boomer, GenX, GenZ, Millennial, etc.) do you play video games?

Which ones? I would love to know the names. Yes, even if you play 10 games constantly... I'm very curious.

Please?

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@mentallyalex I'm currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn, previously Ni no Kuni. I haven't played much over the past few years but since getting a Steam Deck I find it easier to sneak the occasional 30 mins into my busy schedule.

The Verge article on the best printer in 2024 is just completely brilliant in so many ways.

And also kinda sad.

@ross Not only an indictment of the printer industry but of LLMs too. You can tell the author has just had enough.

What are you most excited about in web dev right now?

Jbasoo,

@cferdinandi It's not exactly exciting in itself, but the increased interop efforts means that the new, shiny, exciting features should be useable faster.

My pessimism for the Affinity acquisition was perhaps too strong yesterday?

Today I got this in my email, four pledges - here is a quote from the first

"If we do offer a subscription, it will only ever be as an option alongside the perpetual model, for those who prefer it. This fits with enabling Canva users to start adopting Affinity."

If they can stick to pledge 1, of always offering a perpetual license, then I can be happy with that.

@christian @hamatti I think these days I just try to have the "enjoy it while it lasts" mindset and try not to get too attached to tools that will either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain.

A tech company has adjusted its hiring focus to prioritize individuals with formal computer science degrees. They will no longer consider self-taught developers. What do you think? Is this a positive change? https://www.reddit.com/r/learnprogramming/comments/1bmm967/my_company_just_decided_to_stop_hiring_self/

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@ondrej @nixCraft Yep, I'm self taught myself and have worked with junior grads who, while often very smart, have a lot of knowledge gaps through lack of real world experience. It really is down to the person how much knowledge they have and soft skills are also very important in a team.

That being said, I would love to study CS myself and address my own knowledge gaps but I don't think it's logistically possible right now.

CSS People... am I making it up, or have I seen a thing recently with modern techniques that allow you to make animatable background gradients of a sort where you have heavily blurred blobs wandering around, that's actually performant and not a banded mess?

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@mattwilcox @brucelawson Yeah @ property allows you to animate custom properties, although I believe it might still be processed on the main thread. For blending blobs together you can get creative with filters and background-blend-mode or mix-blend-mode. I experimented a bit with this recently and there's gooey trick that's been around for a while.

Starting to feel like there’s something wrong with me as a developer, when I see my colleague’s happy faces whenever AI or LLMs are mentioned. At best it’s a little interesting and at worst a ridiculous waste of resources for a negative value.

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@robinwhittleton Same. We had a big company strategy meeting recently and my boss said we should all be using AI. I've occasionally found it useful, but more often than not Copilot just churns out nonsense, or it needs a lot of hints to be useful, especially outside of JavaScript.

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@robinwhittleton Yeah I ended up turning off its auto complete suggestions as the constant stream of rubbish was getting annoying. It's handy for refactoring JS and sometimes explaining things but with all its flaws I just don't trust it most of the time.

DavidDarnes, to random

Deleted a frankly way too fragile dependency within my site. I was using degit to pluck out some CSS from Ghost without having to download the whole thing on install. However I didn't need it as I wasn't even using the things they style.

Goes to show that you should really only add CSS to a project when you know it's going to get used, even when it's boilerplate or reset stuff

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@westbrook @DavidDarnes The coverage feature in dev tools is handy for flagging unused CSS.

#nuejs looks way too ambitious to be taken seriously. I might be absolutely wrong tho. Also why does the creator keeps calling it "Perfect web framework" ? There is no such thing as "perfect" and you shouldn't resort to such "marketing" gimmick when you called out #tailwind for misleading marketing (still hate tailwind anyway)
