#RetroGaming #Event #idea: pop-up #arcade, where people bring a cheap LAN party rig and a pair of controllers and then people can go around from table to table and play whatever game they brought. There could be a theme for the night (8-bit, female protagonist, Japanese dating sim, etc) and prizes for the games that fit it best. Event space could be indoor or outdoor (using laptops and projectors for screens)

I recently thought about the different ways you can "have" a place in the Internet:

  • Bare metal
  • Dedicated server
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS)
  • Shared Hosting
  • Serverless
  • fly.io
  • Netlify, Vercel, etc

#webdev #frontend #selfhosting

@ayo don't forget IPFS and ENS; content hosting that starts on your machine but gets distributed like BitTorrent, and domain names that are purchased on the Blockchain.

Hey, any web dev people here?

How would one implement an image / video / zip downloader that first hits S3, and if unsuccessful, then hits IPFS as a fallback.

Like, that type of thing needs to already exist in some form, right?

#software #website #conservation

schizanon,
@schizanon@mastodon.social avatar

@jupiter why would you want to do that? If it's not on S3 why would it be on IPFS? Are you paying a pinning service to host the file? if so, why not just have it on S3? If not, you can't trust the file to be on IPFS.

schizanon,
@schizanon@mastodon.social avatar

@ArneBab @jupiter why not use IPFS before your S3 budget runs out?

My point was that IPFS isn't going to have your file unless people have been downloading it with IPFS, or you are paying a pinning service to host it.

I'm old enough to remember how @creativecommons was founded as a way for independent creators to safely share their work and build upon each other.

In 2024, their take is now "billion dollar companies plagiarizing your art is fair use".

https://creativecommons.org/2023/02/17/fair-use-training-generative-ai/

Hats off to the author, you don't see that kind of, uh, skillful rhetoric chicanery every day. Like "generative AI doesn't compete with artists because artists are not in the data market". 😬

    @ayo the only part of the frontend that a client doesn't replace is the OAuth pages. If you want to use Elk/Phanpy you'd need to add those.

    schizanon, to passkeys
    @schizanon@mastodon.social avatar

    PassKeys seem like a bad idea. Google backs them up to the cloud, so if your Google account is compromised then all your private keys are compromised. I don't see how that's an improvement over password+2FA at all.

    Now security keys I get; keep the private key on an airgapped device. That's good. Hell I even keep my 2FA-OTP salts on a YubiKey.

    schizanon,
    @schizanon@mastodon.social avatar

    The funniest part is that no matter how many security factors we use to replace passwords (two factor auth, passkeys, security keys, etc) there's always a backup that's just another password.

    The caller says they're from your bank and they're calling about a suspected fraud.

    "Oh yeah," you think. Obvious scam, right?

    The caller says "I'll send you an in-app notification to prove I'm calling from your bank."

    > there are big questions still being asked about how CSS should handle masonry-style layouts. Some people remain skeptical that this capability should be part of CSS Grid, and want it to instead be its own separate display type. Others are questioning whether or not this kind of layout is needed on the web at all — they aren’t sure that well-known websites will use it.
