Thoughts on Tailwind? I’ve been out the loop of CSS frameworks / design systems for a while and wondering what all the hype is about.

Jbasoo,
@Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

@si People tend to be in 2 camps:

  1. Tailwind everything, vanilla CSS and preprocessing sucks
  2. Tailwind sucks, vanilla CSS and/or preprocess everything

Like most arguments on the internet, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. It's a top-tier utility library but trying to use utilities for everything (as Tailwind recommends) means you need to learn a new syntax for everything. It often doesn't support the more fun/complex CSS features or implements it in an extremely convoluted way.

I really love Laura Kampf’s videos and especially her house series. But I’m pretty sure when she’s done with the house she has replaced every tiny piece of it https://youtu.be/PIcft4sAtgc

@bastianallgeier it's heartbreaking every time she finds something else that needs fixing

It’s always a sad day when you’re on a plane and you can’t get a full can of ginger ale because it’s not “free” but they also won’t let you buy one because it’s not a “premium” beverage. It’s the beverage of airborne kings and I would like to pay for the whole supply!

Jbasoo,

@snazzyq I'm confused, they have it but won't let you buy it?

    @ianbetteridge @leftylabourtech It kind of makes my job making websites easier though. If something works in Chrome I know it'll work in Edge and a bunch of other browsers because they're all based on and contribute to Chromium. Safari is annoying because it's everywhere and almost aligned with the others but not quite. I'm sad at the decline of Firefox though, it's ok but often lagging behind on features and a bit quirky.

    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @ianbetteridge @leftylabourtech yep! I'm torn between "competition combats monopolies" and "collaboration unifies"

    Since I need to completely reassemble my stationary monitor arm, I’m considering a new one.

    Can anyone recommend a VESA monitor arm that allows easy change in height (without tools involved)?

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @nzakas I have this one, there's a lot of a similar style. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08B8X4KBV?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @nmn @nzakas Yeah it can swing out behind and hit the wall if you're not careful when moving the monitor around but I don't have any issues with it. I only needed a couple of centimeters, which I need for cables anyway. If you offset the base a bit then the arm sits more sideways with the monitor in the center.

    Are you excited about Nesting in CSS, now that it’s in both Safari and Chrome/Edge?

    How do you think your team will use it? When? How often? Or not?

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @jensimmons oh I'll use it all the time when it has enough support. It's the main thing that keeps me using a preprocessor.

    I have a page with 500+ <audio> tags, the src files are not loaded automatically preload="none". The page is super fast to load in a desktop browser, but not in any device. Any tips on what is happening and why?

    page size: 164KB

    Please toot for more reach.

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @kushal Can you check the network requests to see if Safari is respecting the preload setting? Preload is intended as a hint to the browser only so maybe Safari has some weird logic around what to load.

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @kushal oh, interesting. I wonder if the issue is network related or if it's just struggling rendering that many tags.

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @kushal @crschmidt in that case it might be a rendering issue. Could probably be confirmed by using the remote web inspector in desktop safari, hooking it up to a real device/emulator and checking the timeline.

    Solving that would be interesting though. Either adding pagination or doing some intersection observer magic to only write the tag when the user scrolls near the tag location.

    Pretty impressed as to how bad the onboarding experience with ID Mobile has been. Their live chat bot is trying to get my to cancel the plan when I'm asking to update my date of birth.

    Their support docs/site doesn't match the actual system (like phone support system).

    Started billing me 2 days ahead of delivering SIM.

    Create account, submit button doesn't work when 1password fills in pwd field.

    Love being this frustrated.

    Hope dob is the only problem!

    OK I was wrong, I’m becoming an AI business comms accelerationist. Expose professional job lingo as the useless filler it is! Let people apply for jobs with “interested! 8 years exp”! If an AI can fill the rest out it was worthless information anyway!

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @thedextriarchy there was a meme circulating a while ago where person 1 used AI to turn a summary into an email and person 2 used AI to turn the email back into a summary. I can definitely see that happening.

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @thedextriarchy English language pleasantries are incredibly inefficient. I wonder if that's the kind of feature that's just unnecessary in some cultures.

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @thedextriarchy Yeah formal tone can be incredibly frustrating especially for those whose first language isn't English. My wife is Finnish and on the spectrum so the British style doesn't always click immediately 😅 She's much more direct. I guess AI conversation "decoding" might actually be helpful for some.

    Jbasoo,
    @Jbasoo@mastodon.social avatar

    @thedextriarchy Couldn't agree more. It almost feels like it's trying to address the human quirk of code-switching with a monetizable technological solution. Maybe helpful in some cases but it doesn't solve cultural friction.

    The refresher dialogue you get in 'Return to Monkey Island' when coming back to the game after a couple of days of not playing, asking if you remember where you left off and giving you the option to get a brief reminder of the story so far and your current objectives, or just get right back into the game, is such a neat feature. More games should be doing this, please.

    Jbasoo,

    @gadgetoid I agree in principle, but most people don't have a sensitive enough scale to measure a "pinch". I have one for baking and it's great but I don't imagine it's that common.
