In 2017 a man, after some thought, had a simple but genius idea and took a camera on a Southwest flight from Portland, Oregon to St. Louise and captured one of the most breathtaking images of all time.

Jon Carmichael's "108" is probably my favorite image and provokes introspection every time I see it.

A woman with paralysis speaks through a digital avatar after 18 years.

Brain-computer interfacing is an incredible field and one I've always been interested in. I can't believe how far it has come in the last 10 years.

I can't imagine the pain of being trapped, silent and aware, for that long. Hopefully this tech helps her find some happiness, and others who can benefit from it as well!

We worry about the spread of and "alternative facts" while gating academic and scientific research behind paywalls that grossly limit public access.

Here is our paper! My shows how certain adult neurons resist activity changes.

On a macro level, this could provide a new hypothesis for why adults exhibit resistance to , , and .

A key question is why? It may not only be a negative byproduct of age but could be an evolutionary advantage to resist trauma or external influence after we've found "successful strategies" while younger.

IsaacOstlund,

In response to a few questions people have asked:

We used whole-cell patch-clamp to record the activity of single .

The "resist changes" refers to . We found a reduction in long-term depression, or , in adult mice after high frequency stimulus (HFS) compared to adolescent mice.

These cells are specifically releasing cells in the ventral tegmental area ( ), where GABA can regulate dopamine release throughout the .

#NASA announced a free streaming service called NASA+ !? Best streaming platform already and it's not even out yet.

Hopefully they don't have plans for a NASA+ Pro Max...

continues to fill me with wonder and awe. These images are amazing.

What is it about the vast dark and bright expanse that gives me pause and hope? Do have any favorites to share?

IsaacOstlund,

@mrcompletely Beautiful! I can see the silhouette and everything. Really cool

NPR's operating budget is $300 M, and 1%, or $3 M is funded by federal subsidies

The LA Times calculates the federal subsidies Musk's companies have received at $4.9 B.

Let's be generous and say Musk received those subsidies over a 10 year period, while NPR would have received ~$30 M in subsidies.

4.9 B / 30 M = Musk received 163x what NPR has from "the state."

Who is state funded then?

IsaacOstlund,

@freemo Concerning "owner" I'd say majority shareholder works for me. And he is the majority shareholder of #Tesla

And I compare it to #NPR because of his direct criticism of it receiving government money

One company compared to one company.

IsaacOstlund,

@freemo this post is a bit old, so I forgot my exact language. Now I see your point and it's really good.

If I drop other companies that #Elon controls and look at only Tesla, it's received roughly 2.8 billion in government subsidies since 2007. Significantly less than the total listed above, but still more than NPR's roughly 45 million during the same period.

Does anyone else have dreams where they have a friendship so strong and the simple joy seems so real that when you wake up you feel a deep sense of loss for something that isn't real? Asking for a friend :(

Untapped Potential

We have the potential to reach into the stars, find new technologies, save the planet, and so much more. But right now, it's unrealized, and who can say if we'll make it? And if we do, will we lose something of ourselves on the way?

This is a #SciFi #landscape I did. I've noticed a lot of my more recent work is aimed at a hopeful future, but also feels sort of lonely.

"On a macro level, our research could provide a new hypothesis for why adults exhibit greater resistance to learning, anxiety, and addiction compared to children and adolescents."

I made this image for a thesis presentation i did a while back. The data has been accepted and will be published soon!

IsaacOstlund,

@HistoPol

Here is the paper! Our results show how adult GABA neurons resist changes in activity, which means adult dopamine neurons are less regulated. This has drug addiction, learning, and memory implications!
