IsaacOstlund,

In 2017 a man, after some thought, had a simple but genius idea and took a camera on a Southwest flight from Portland, Oregon to St. Louise and captured one of the most breathtaking images of all time.

Jon Carmichael's "108" is probably my favorite image and provokes introspection every time I see it.

@IsaacOstlund oh my word. And that's shot from the window of a commercial flight?!

@IsaacOstlund I want to know why the moon is the perfect size for a spectacular eclipse.

Apparently, it's basically just a coincidence! The sun is about 400 times wider but also about 400 times further away, so they take up about the same size in the sky, making eclipses cool. There's no fundamental reason this has to be the case.

I love the question in that article "So why do we happen to live in the brief period of Earth’s history when the moon just barely blocks the sun?"

Thinking about it, rationally, it's like asking "why do people win the lottery when the odds against winning are so high?"
