Maybe not such a bad plan to plant an apple tree and grow some veg if you have a garden, or support/start a community garden if not.

“Currently just under 50% of the UK's food is imported including 80% of fruit, 50% of vegetables, and 20% of beef and poultry, while the UK is almost completely self-sufficient for wheat, barley, lamb, and potatoes. “

Uk folk: As we move into spring/summer, and you notice some pretty verges blooming with wildflowers, please remember to contact your council and say how much you like them & how good they are.
If they only hear from people complaining it looks untidy, they will cut it back.
If there are no verges left long, write & suggest they should be
Plantlife (UK charity) has more info
https://www.plantlife.org.uk/our-work/road-verges/

If not in the uk you can do this too, I just don’t know who you would contact

It’s that time of year again, the sphagnum moss in the bog garden is sporing. Though it does look like an aliens eye stalks poking up out of the moss.

These messy patches are full of bees. They used to be either weed killer-ed or strimmed regularly until I adopted them from the folks who were doing their best with the time & resources they had available to them. The land doesn’t really belong to anyone.
So happy to see how they have developed over the years. And feel like I’m creating habitat that was not there before, for lots of creatures.

A long border filled with plants leading away from the photographer. There are large lavender plants just opening their flowers, ladies bedstraw, oregano and some cotoneaster growing up the wall that borders the back of the bed to the right. A gravel path is on the left.

I’ve just been checking hashtags and realised: there is not nearly enough insectivorous plant content on mastodon, I’m going to do my best to help remedy this, but I would appreciate help.
If you have insectivorous plants and you are not sharing photos of them, well, please do.

Keeping up the insectivorous content- another old photo, from 2020, close up of a couple of types of sundew plant we keep in our porch. The plants grow in sphagnum moss and rainwater. the moss grows very well, so the plants have to keep reaching up to stay in the light

It feels like we should be in a superhero film, only :
-the villains own ALL the companies & governments, not just the odd one.

-The police are busy being told to enforce the villain leading status quo.

  • the Newspapers are either pretending there are no villains, or that we should suck it up.

-And there is no superhero.

A photo of a flower, I love the way the flowers wait in turn on the stem, with only that day's flower at the top point of the curve.

This frog spent yesterday hanging out in our garden pretending it wasn’t there whenever we looked at it. It was probably listening to the frogs singing in next doors pond

The news is all “how to best give your house to your child” and “heatwaves all over the northern hemisphere”
“many dead in extreme weather event” followed by “get the latest interior look” .
“Half the honey bees in America died last winter” vs “latest Royal spat”

And the dissonance is so extreme.
Feels like reality is stretching and might break.

Managed a bit of environmental education yesterday talking to someone wanting to “tidy up” a patch of nettles and put down some grass seed.
They had no idea that the nettles were an important food source for caterpillars.
Even got into the whole food chain with the caterpillars being needed for the birds.
Was a positive and useful conversation, it’s easy to forget that what seems obvious to me is down to what I’ve learned over the years & not everyone has the same knowledge base.

#fungiFriday this fungi was paper thin and only just still upright.
(Still can’t move the photo edit window to be able to press apply for the picture text on my phone -is it just me?)
#AltText : white mushroom with upturned cap, very thin and see through, lines of black spores still visible. Grass and plantain leaves as fore- and back-ground

Ha! Just tried to hover over a photo sent in what’s app to get the alt text (I am sighted, and could see the image)
There was none of course, but made me realise how much I use the Alt text to get extra details, like where the photo was taken.
Alt text is great for everyone.

I have a pot which is now full of moss ready to release spores.
I’ll keep the pot to see if any of the Scottish primrose seeds I sprinkled in it last year end up germinating, this way I get pretty moss too.

Has anyone had any experience of using anaerobic digester digestate (the solid stuff that comes out the end)? One of the community gardens I’m involved with has been offered a tonne bag full of it.
I think it can be used as a mulch but we’ve been warned not to add it too thickly. I’ve been gifted a small bag of the digestate today & it smelled a bit like ammonia.
Any tips?
