    You know what else we played with when I was a kid? Mercury. Yeah. It was common to collect blobs of it from old thermostats or whatever, and roll them around and watch their blobbing antics. Kids would rub the stuff on coins with their fingers, all sorts of activities. I never heard of a single case of mercury poisoning from this. But now, let a single drop of mercury be found in a school, and they literally evacuate the entire place and send in the hazmat team.

    The problem with mercury isn't so much the acute poisoning that you're thinking about here, it's that it is eliminated so slowly from the body that your total lifetime exposure matters. All of us who had that joyful teaching experience will still be carrying a measurable momento of it, and will be a little more susceptible to mercury poisoning as a result

    Many years ago, when I was working on the first "Star Trek" film (ST:TMP - "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" - 1979), while I was chatting with one of the high level production powers-that-be, I mentioned that it seemed rather silly that the Enterprise was piloted like a WWII battleship. "By that time," I asserted, "Everything will be run almost entirely by computers, not by so many manual controls."

    He looked thoughtful, and then he replied, "Lauren, you're right. But if we did it your way, we wouldn't have a movie."

    And of course, he was correct.

    I read a piece about that not so long back which used recent scripts to hypothesize that communicator badges use AI - not only to choose who to route your calls to but to judge when they begin.

    (Because in some shots characters fail to say 'Picard to Enterprise' or whatever at the beginning, or 'Picard out' at the end, thus reducing hails and sign-offs to 'best practice')

    "Day One" obviously isn't a literal day. It wouldn't be possible to do the things he's laid out in one day. "Day One" is a biblical day, and denotes the period between his election and his tearing down of the entire conditional system.

    The end of Day One, therefore, is not defined and likely ever-receding.

    This morning's early awakening brought to you by the word "motherlode" because I used a derivation of it yesterday. In the pale hours, Mr Brain pops up with "what exactly is a lode? Is it the same as in lodestone?"

    Turns out 'lode' in Middle English was a 'carrying path', so all about direction. A lodestone gave the path to magnetic north; miners thought veins of minerals looked like roads; and best of all your live-lihood (lode hiding in variant spelling) was your path through life

    People have opined that this is a consequence of his craziness, or an opportunity for his grifting. But I can't help thinking that this is bad news for Chansley because it likely means he's being backed (and by that I mean 'steered') by one of the power brokers here.

    Public statements aside they will have nothing but contempt for him, and when his usefulness is over he will at best be left to die in a roomful of coke.

    Meet Cecilia.

    Turned up desperately ill, dehydrated and starving on our doorstep a while ago.

    Now recovering well from major surgery to remove a huge polyp (hence the still slightly closed eye), thanks to Cats Protection's help.

    We've agreed she can move in permanently. 🐈

    She and Napoleon will be introduced slowly. Both are pretty un-territorial, they'll adjust to each other.

    No way we were going to leave her without a perma-home, after she'd already been abandoned once as a kitten.

    Healthy little torty kitty chilling happily on a cardboard scratching block.
