This guy made a tool that beeps every time a website sends data about you to Google. The beeps blur into a continuous buzz: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/tracker-beeper/

I use Privacy Badger (https://privacybadger.org/, blocks trackers), uBlock Origin (https://ublockorigin.com/, adblocker), Firefox, and the SearXNG search engine (https://searxng.ca/ or find instances at https://searx.space/), but it's annoying I have to.

A video of navigating various popular news sites (Daily Mail, nu.nl, telegraaf.nl) in Chrome. A terminal is visible in the background, running a program that beeps ever time the site reports back to Google.

Hasse alles daran.

I wonder why the Android Gmail app shows the number of emails in your trash. They don't do that in the web version.

I use filters and labels pretty extensively, so this breaks the ability to quickly scan my unread emails.

Minor nuisance, but still makes me wonder about this design decision/inconsistency.

@stefan @voorstad Perhaps (only guessing) you don't overview completely the ramifications of using #Google and the like. I do to large extent. I personally had two quite frightening experiences with Google myself. Since then I am very strict in my decline of Google and the rest of the gang, sorry.

Wie oft bekommt man eigentlich eine neue IP-Adresse?

Ich teste das gerade mit diesem Script, dass ich täglich aufrufe:
printf "IP: %s - %s\n" $(curl -s ipinfo.io/ip) $(date +'%d.%m.%Y') >>iplog4.txt;printf "IP: %s - %s\n" $(curl -s v6.ipinfo.io/ip) $(date +'%d.%m.%Y') >>iplog6.txt

Könnt ihr auch manuell abrufen und notieren (oder lokal im System abfragen, aber das ist meist komplizierter):

https://v6.ipinfo.io/ip

Mich interessieren die Ergebnisse wegen #tracking:

I understand why people are against #tracking but what is the concern with #analytics? As a developer with less and less time to focus on personal projects, I find it incredibly useful to know if I develop a feature that basically never gets used because I can just drop that feature and save myself some time when it comes to maintaining that app, so then I can spend more time on things that actually get used to make sure they're rock solid and as good as they can be

Why does Mozilla #Firefox default to allowing websites to use persistent storage, and thus consume gigabytes of disk space when few websites actually have legitimate reasons to use the StorageManager? Isn't that both an invitation to fill my disk and a #tracking / #privacy pitfall?

Seems like there's no UI to facilitate selectively cleaning this stuff, i.e. nuking the local storage for all websites "except these few websites" (and without touching cookies), nor do I see a way to require opt-in.

When it comes to #tracking users, the focus is often on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.

The European data protection group noyb @noybeu filed a complaint against #X / #Twitter last year for violating the #GDPR:

As determined by noyb, the company collects sensitive data such as political views and religious beliefs by monitoring clicks, likes and responses to posts on its own platform.
Felix Mikolasch, data protection lawyer at noyb: “After we filed our first complaint in this matter, the EU Commission has already confirmed to stop advertising on X. However, to put an end to this in general, we need enforcement against X as a platform used by many others.”

    In our petition
    👉 https://www.openpetition.de/Unis4Mastodon
we pointed out the #DataProtection problems with the major platforms and thus recommend the use of #Fediverse services at #universities.

    Concerning

As you walk by, "The sign collects a [cell phone] device’s unique address, which is encrypted before it’s sent back to Soofa, the company said. Soofa described the collection as “passive.”"

Soofa tries hard to convince people there is no threat because THEY don't share with 3rd parties, but only turn the information over to the municipalities.

Beyond that, though, they can't assure that governments won't share, nor can they vouch for how well municipalities will protect the data.

Very concerning as a privacy issue.

What I don't get about the whole TikTok spying on Americans argument is that why this is different than what Meta and Google et al does? I mean, can't China (which the accusation is directed at) just buy the data from any of the numerous data brokers anyway?

Norwegian investigative journalists have show how easy it is to piece together detailed info about random individuals from so-called anonymised tracking data you can just buy.
