Kareen Abdul-Jabbar notes that House Speaker Mike Johnson has explicitly stated that he rejects the first amendment's stipulatiion that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…”
Instead, he stated in 2016, he wants a "biblical republic."
With him and men like him interpreting the bible for the rest of us….
Annika Brockschmidt presents a chilling, thorough, and well-documented overview of the white Christian nationalist views that Mike Johnson and those allied with him hope to impose on the entire nation. As she concludes,
"Apparently, even the most spirited Googling hasn’t clued some media into the revolutionary movements that influenced the man who stands second in line to the presidency."
"And this routine continues to work for Johnson—with the Washington Post recently publishing—to put it diplomatically, a puff piece; or, more frankly, a free campaign ad—claiming that 'faith and family' lead the way for him. No further mention of the fact that his faith makes him strive for the implementation of theocracy."
"That a fringe figure like Johnson is the 'compromise candidate' behind whom House Republicans have unanimously rallied bodes ill—for marginalized people in the US, and for American democracy as a whole."
"House Speaker Mike Johnson has three flags hanging outside his office: the American flag, the Louisiana state flag, and a flag representing a movement that wants to turn the United States into a religious Christian nation."
As Tori Otten notes, the third flag is associated with the theocratic movement New Apostolic Reformation, and was everywhere in the Jan. 6 insurrection riot.
They no longer believe in democracy. They're telling us this right out in the open.
They believe that they, as a minority, should be allowed to dictate to us, the majority.
Many of them back that claim by speaking of "God," who, they assert, has told them they should have authority over us in a theocracy with them in control.
Their leading presidential candidate is saying right out in the open that he intends to dismantle democracy if elected.
"North Dakota state representative Brandon Prichard was much more explicit. Opposed to the measure, he wrote, 'Direct democracy should not exist…. It would be an act of courage to ignore the results of the election….' According to James Bickerton of Newsweek, Prichard has previously called for Republican-dominated states to 'put into code that Jesus Christ is King and dedicate their state to Him.'”
‘Pure Democracies Are Not the Way to Run a Country,’ Says Former Sen. Rick Santorum.
Rick Santorum claimed on Tuesday that Ohio’s decision to legalize marijuana and enshrine abortion in the state constitution was proof that “pure democracies are not the way to run a country.”
So, another #republican against democracy speaks out...
He's just another wannabe #fascist dictator
Please VOTE at every level....
It's working .. 👍 👍 👍
It would be unfair to say that religion, broadly defined, is responsible for a large proportion of humanity's ills since the caves (and perhaps even earlier). But reality often isn't fair.
This week's comic: The things Mike Johnson has said are so over the top that I thought I might place him in the role of my flaming conservative character (hence the flames, in case anyone was wondering about that). It’s almost impossible to exaggerate this man’s theocratic worldview, so I tried to use actual quotes where I could.
Of 3 conflicts in Israel, only 1 against #Hamas is legitimate. The other 2 — #IDF hitting civilians in Gaza, & settlers hitting civilians in #WestBank are not.
We shouldn't take Muslim's for granted. And Israel should not take US for granted. We are staunch allies, but our support should have conditions.
I am an exvangelical, ex-fundamentalist, ex-Christian Nationalist raving batshit Duggar wannabe. I fled that culture 22 years ago after having six babies (within nine years) for Jesus in order to “take back our Christian nation” from all y’all unrepentant evil pagans in the USA. You are second-class citizens to these people. If you aren’t afraid that the Speaker of the House is a Christian nationalist, you should be. #ChristianNationalism#MikeJohnson#theocracy#VoteBlue
"As a historian, I can assure you that Mike Johnson isn’t doing what the Founders want. And as a Christian, I’d personally argue he’s not actually doing what the Bible promotes.
Mike Johnson is doing what Mike Johnson wants. And no matter how hard he tries to wrap it in the flag and the cross, his agenda is quite extreme."
One of the most frustrating things about the current anti-trans moral panic is how the mainstream media has eagerly embraced it (Guardian/Observer, NY Times) despite it being based purely on pseudoscience. The fact that every mainstream (read: non-right-wing fake) medical organization supports gender-affirming care for children and adults sails right over their heads.
As Ellie Quinlan Houghtaling says, a website with podcasts and sermons Mike Johnson has given in churches has now been scrubbed. It showed him saying things like this at First Baptist Church, Haughton, Louisiana, in 2019:
“By the way, the United States is not a democracy. Do you know what a democracy is? Two wolves and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner. You don’t want to be in a democracy. Majority rule: not always a good thing.”
We have a humanitarian crisis caused by one of our allies. Israel has gone rogue, ignoring calls for a ceasefire from the UN, showing no remorse for killing children as they give in to their rage over the criminal actions of Hamas.
#POTUS Biden's inability to control autocratic Israel has divided #Democrats and will cost him the #election. #Trump returns to office and resumes his narcissitic destruction of the USA.
It was a nice country while it lasted. #Religion sucks.
Utah Makes Welfare So Hard to Get, Some Feel They Must Join the LDS Church to Get Aid
"Utah’s safety net for the poor is so intertwined with the LDS Church that individual bishops often decide who receives assistance. Some deny help unless a person goes to services or gets baptized."
"[Mike Johnson is] a Christian Nationalist, which means that he believes that Christians matter and other people don’t matter. Christian Nationalists will put it another way, but that’s what it comes to in the end: they have immeasurable worth, everyone else who doesn’t agree to become them is fodder. …
And I think the appropriate sort of response to all of this is anger."
