Surveys of #ChineseScientists over 2023 portray environments of #fear. A study in June 2023 surveyed US based #scientists of #Chinese descent found that 72% of respondents don't feel safe as an #AcademicResearcher, 61% considered leaving #UnitedStates & 45% wish to avoid applying for federal grants.
This #technology is still in its infancy and the biggest challenge will be how to effectively capture #CO2 - but it's hoped advances like this could slow the planet's rapid warming.
The #Antarctic experiment offered a snapshot of something that has happened innumerable times throughout human history, as groups of people have become cut off from others, leading their accents, dialects and even languages to diverge from each other. On a grand scale, the researchers say it can provide insights into why American and British #English has diverged in the way it has.
An international team of #scientists have described new #fossils of Dinocephalosaurus orientalis - a five-metre-long aquatic #reptile from the #Triassic period of #China, dating to around 240 million years old.
With 32 separate neck vertebrae Dinocephalosaurus orientalis had an extraordinarily long neck that draws comparison with that of Tanystropheus hydroides, another strange marine reptile from the Middle Triassic of both Europe and China.
Happening RIGHT NOW: The Great Backyard #Bird Count #gbbc2024. Don’t miss your chance to help #birds 🪶🪺 and the #scientists 👩🔬 who study them! I just completed a 15 min survey and all I saw was a pair of crows - but that is STILL valuable data for the Cornell Ornithology, Audubon and Birds Canada 🇨🇦 NGOs who use this data. It’s easy and fun! Take part! https://www.birdcount.org/
"New UN weather agency chief says rate of global warming is speeding up
The new chief of the World Meteorological Organization said it looks to her that the rate of human-caused climate change is accelerating and that warming has triggered more #Arctic cold outbreaks in North America and #Europe, weighing in on two issues that divide #climate#scientists."
It’s come to this. W/ #Earth at its hottest point in recorded history, & #humans doing far from enough to stop its overheating, a small but growing number of #astronomers & #physicists are proposing a potential fix that could have leaped from the pages of science fiction: The equivalent of a giant beach umbrella, floating in outer #space.
The idea is to create a huge sunshade & send it to a far away point between the Earth & the sun to block a small but crucial amount of #SolarRadiation, enough to counter #GlobalWarming. #Scientists have calculated that if just shy of 2% of the sun’s #radiation is blocked, that would be enough to cool the planet by 1.5°C, or 2.7°F, & keep Earth w/in manageable #climate boundaries.
Folks, an open call: I am #hiring TWO Principal Research #Scientists to join the Developer Success Lab!
One is a scientist with statistics/psychometrics focus (R is our ecosystem here), and one is an intervention science focus; both are fully remote roles working directly with me, our current Principal Scientist, and our brand-new Principal Dev Experience Engineer on our public-facing empirical research mission 🙌
Make no mistake: #oil and power companies will fight HARD against this.
"Recent solar power advances have led #scientists to predict that millions of homes... could go off grid over the coming years [becoming] self-sufficient using just #SolarPanels and batteries."

🌍 Calling all #scientists#professors#PIs#teamleaders#PhDs#phD passionate about shaping the future of research! I am looking forward to form a scientific collective to initiate a more transparent way to do research, as we can work together to break barriers, share knowledge, and empower global scientific progress. 🧪🔬🚀
We will use a new platform #bonfire to lead this change!
Let's innovate 🌱🔍🤝 #ResearchForAll#openscience#opensource
"The team found two #octopus nurseries affiliated with #hydrothermal springs during their first expedition in June. Six months later, scientists returned to the nurseries and confirmed they appear to be active year-round. They also observed several other new octopus species away from the hydrothermal springs."
Valley of lost cities that flourished 2,000 years ago found in Amazon
Archaeologists have uncovered a cluster of lost cities in the Amazon rainforest that was home to at least 10,000 farmers about 2,000 years ago.
The settlements were occupied by the Upano people between about 500BC and AD300 to 600 – a period roughly contemporaneous with the Roman empire in Europe, the researchers found.
While it is difficult to estimate populations, the site was home to at least 10,000 inhabitants –
#Scientists have recently also found evidence of intricate #rainforest societies that predated European contact elsewhere in the Amazon, including in Bolivia and in Brazil.
“There’s always been an incredible #diversity of people and settlements in the #Amazon, not only one way to live,” said Rostain. “We’re just learning more about them.”
If "we" (#politics, #business &, we are all "consumers") make a 'superior' effort to dial down greenhouse gas emissions as soon as is practical, the #science clearly shows that whatever those climate events are, they will be far more manageable for all concerned, compared to a business as usual dystopian future

Prominent #Israelis Demand End to Calls for Outright #Genocide From Top Officials
"When it comes to the statements of #Jews instigating mass deportation and even genocide—the legal adviser to the government, the state attorney, and the entire prosecution system are silent," wrote a group of prominent Israelis.
Large, round balls are thought to #protect land & cattle in Padlya village near Khandwa district in Madhya Pradesh. The balls are named "Kakar Bhairav", the first meaning 'farm' & the second 'ruler'. There are about 256 of them.
Recently, #scientists discovered that the #sacred balls are really fossilised eggs belonging to a #dinosaur species of Titanosaurus.
