If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.
Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.
We'll see what happens there but the point is the same: the Copyright Cartel and publishers want to kill libraries as we know it and this is the first major step into that goal.
It's time to archive the Archive turn it unto a decentralized platform before it's too late. I hope someone out there is working on that plus libraries need to do this too.
Oh well, the official #Mastodon app doubled down on making mastodon.social the default sign-up server. This is a risky move because this will undeniably make the server bigger than it already is.
It is still unclear why mastodon.social, of all instances, was chosen, while there are so many other instances. I'm not too happy with this decision.
“decentralization” is not a consumer feature. It’s like telling someone it’s a 3.2Hz quad core with extra L2 cache. It’s like, “uh, great. Why does that matter?”
Owning your data, freely able to migrate, superior privacy controls. These are features to communicate.
“We believe it’s important for Mastodon to be good as a product on its own merits, and not just because of its ideology. If we only attract people who already care about decentralization, our ability to make decentralization mainstream becomes that much harder. Making the onboarding process as easy as possible helps new users get past the sign-up process and more quickly engage with others.”
https://mastodon.social being down, presumably because they're testing some of their latest features they're working on, and in the process kicking 1 million out of the 11.8 million people* (thanks @nemobis for the correction) from the fediverse is a good reminder to check out other Mastodon instances, or even other fediverse services and platforms.
David Rosenthal (aka DSHR): "To sum up, permissionless #blockchain technology is clever, but the economics of applying it to the real world are stupid for the reasons I published nearly 9 years ago. Centralization in the information ecosystem is a very serious problem, but it is driven by economics, not technology. So attempting to solve it with technology with inherent economies of scale is futile." https://blog.dshr.org/2023/04/crypto-my-part-in-its-downfall.html#cryptocurrency#bitcoin#fraud#decentralization
#Telegram was blocked in my country (#Brazil) yesterday on all ISPs, and soon they will be removed from App Store and Play Store ... that's why decentralized communication apps are so important, apps like #Session and #Matrix are trending here right now.
Too many people are focusing on #decentralization (prevention of takeover) as the most important thing about Mastodon. Here's why I think that's wrong: even a decentralised network can be a "freeze peach" cesspit of hatred, just like Twitter and other libertarian techbro social networks, if it chooses to be. The most important thing about Mastodon is that it chooses not to be. https://nileane.fr/@nileane/110259080083016754 #Bluesky
How easy is it to get printers that support banknote-style security features?
If you give everyone with something to sell one of those + a server to serve as a Chaumian eCash mint you could get @cjd's (and I think Thomas Greco Jr's as well IIRC/AFAICS) "decentralised fiat" idea.
Every one could issue notes backed by what they're selling and trade them. #economics#decentralization#EconomicsForRebels (never seen that last hashtag before but it seems apropos)
There's no doubt in my mind that #decentralization is the future of social. #Meta might get the idea of decentralized media out, when #Barcelona comes out.
But, let's see if they actually let the users set the premises. I have my doubts.
Although, when the idea of decentralized social is out there, platforms like #Calckey (among others) will probably have a bunch of curious new users joining in.
To be honest, platforms or dapps that require an email address to sign up pose a risk to personal privacy, such as Bluesky, Mastodon, and Misskey. 😰
🤔I think there are alternatives like WireMin or Session that I find useful.
Personally preferred WireMin, cuz…
WireMin combines end-to-end encrypted messaging for both 1-on-1 chats and chat groups, as well as a blog posting feature called Feed Space. 🚀
Regarding the Dataleaks issue with ChatGPT, I think WireMin has solved this issue in some way because users can use ChatGPT anonymously on WireMin. Even though OpenAI may still be collecting data, it won't be valuable if AI can't recognize who you are, right?🔪
Undeniably, Misskey, Mastodon, and Bluesky are making a great contribution to freedom of speech, and I love using Misskey😍. But I am still concerned about the privacy issue. I wonder why they still need personal information to register. Why not make it like WireMin or Session? Where you just create your username and set a password, and done.🤔🤔🤔 #bluesky#blueskysocial#mastodonmigration#privacymatters#freedomofspeechandexpression#decentralization#dapps#web3
Was just asked by a friend if I wanted a #BlueSky invite.
My reply?
“Thanks but no thanks.”
Why?
Because I don’t need to see the app. I know the people behind it and what they stand for. The app can only ever be a manifestation of (or an initial misdirection from) that.
Expecting the wolf that took a bite out of you last time to this time act in your interests is how you end up as its dinner.
My core value is personal #freedom. I’m strongly for #FreeSoftware and dream of a world in which free software is the default basically everywhere. I’m for a free and open #Internet, against #censorship and intellectual monopolies. #Decentralization is better than centralization. I hate #hierarchies of #power. ✊
I have a low tolerance for #bullshit and zero tolerance for anti-intellectualism. Critical thinking is important to get things done. If you find bullshit in my posts, tell me. 💩
Between this and the ongoing changes on Twitter, and upcoming changes on Reddit, I hope it's becoming ever more clear that we can't rely on profit-driven corporations when it comes to maintaining our public commons.
"Imgur, an image-hosting site that has been one of the web's go-to spots for linking hi-res images since 2010 [...] intends to remove "explicit images" and "old, unused, and inactive content" as of May 15."
And as the fediverse continues to take off, it would be really worth looking into moving to a smaller instance, maybe even starting your own* with a few friends or family.
The lesson here really should be not letting power concentrate in the hands of a few people.
