Was just asked by a friend if I wanted a #BlueSky invite.

My reply?

“Thanks but no thanks.”

Why?

Because I don’t need to see the app. I know the people behind it and what they stand for. The app can only ever be a manifestation of (or an initial misdirection from) that.

Expecting the wolf that took a bite out of you last time to this time act in your interests is how you end up as its dinner.

#BlueSky #JackDorsey #billionaires #SiliconValley #decentralisation #lipService #crypto #bullshit

blabberlicious,

@aral @mastodonmigration
Hard pass for me, too.

'Blue sky thinking’ still makes me throw up a little in my mouth - such a throwback to the sort of management gabble that impressed web 1.0 investors.

@aral I don't bite, and always use Mastodon.
Oh and fuck Musk.

BrooklynAnn,

@aral Seriously. Fuck Jack Dorsey.

@aral

Im thinking, these wolfs have a bite and they can ever stop because that's their nature
So, no thx, I don't want to feed the wolf

morganalafee,

@aral Yup, I second that motion….and why can’t the Fediverse be allowed to be a public forum in peace ???

@aral i gotta say, i’m not impressed with it so far. lotta undesirable bots, lotta crypto oriented people, lotta weird vaguely cultish vibes in various corners

@exchgr @aral Somehow it feels wrong, how pleased I am to hear this.

@exchgr I’m shocked, shocked, I tell you!

Gartenberg,

@exchgr
I'm not important enough for an invite but everything you say rings true.
@aral

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@Gartenberg The very fact that “important” people get “invited” first goes against everything that actual decentralisation stands for. You are important because we‘re all important. I bloody hate these hierarchies.

@exchgr

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@aral @Gartenberg i don’t think it’s actually an importance hierarchy. invite codes seem to be somewhat randomly dispersed, but i think they also factor in how long you’ve been on bluesky. codes are also extremely limited for now because they want to get content moderation right before opening the floodgates, which is admirable. but i don’t think bluesky’s idea of moderation will look anything like mastodon’s

exchgr,
@exchgr@mastodon.world avatar

@aral @Gartenberg also, you can kind of tell how many accounts there are because some accounts follow literally everyone. i think it’s up to about 35k now

Gartenberg,

@exchgr
Ok, you've convinced me on the FOMO, who is sending me an invite.
@aral

@Gartenberg @aral i don’t have any 😅

kkarhan,

@aral EXACTLY!

I don't need a site run by #CryptoBro that wants to #paywall likes...

I'd rather want #decentralization...

PlineyTheNewer,

@aral When it became apparent that the Bird app was no longer viable as my SM platform, I examined a number of alternatives, and they were all corporate entities, subject to billionaire impulse buys, except Mastodon. I only wanted to relocate and start over one time, so this was my choice.

@aral @Ursalzona aside from all the obvious privacy/control issues I just don’t understand why people would risk ending up in another ad-infested network.

How many times will people fall for “oh, no ads now it must be forever” knowing it’s powered by VC money and 5 years laters when enough people are hooked it will become another Instagram.

Most people don’t even remember what life was like when half the content wasn’t ads.

filipesm,

@aral I just see AT as "protocol competition" with AP. My main concern is why it didn't go through W3C. Optimists will say "to move faster", pessimists will say "they wanna monopolise". It's probably both.

Despite this, the spec itself seems to be good and solve some (all?) of AP's issues. I would love to see an expert, like @evan go in depth about AT's flaws, as a protocol. I'm sure it has some.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@filipesm @aral its flaws are that it was launched after AP was standardized and widely used.

Promoting the BS protocol right now is reckless and destructive. We need to rally around the protocols that are working, and improve them with extensions, not bottom up rebuilds.

The people working on BS know how much damage they could do, and they're continuing anyway, because they don't share our values.

Please don't give them attention. They need to disappear quickly.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@filipesm @aral the point of BS is to make a protocol that can be a product.

They don't build on open standards like ActivityPub because they want to own the network.

filipesm,

@evan @aral understood. Ignored.

brunogirin,
@brunogirin@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@evan @filipesm @aral I read BS in your toot as what it's usually an acronym of rather than BlueSky and it makes more sense that way 🙂

kimschulz,

@brunogirin @evan @filipesm @aral BS is indeed the right acronym to use here.

    @sirber Aww, hug

    zorangrbic,

    @aral The only good thing is that it gives people a choice. And even then, I don't really believe myself saying that.

    It's boringly the same as Twitter, it's forking a viable, open source alternative to make it closed-source and go on where #JackDorsey left off at #Twitter.

    Frankly, I don't understand users always following the new, bling-bling thing. Anyway...

    How boring among other things.
