Too many people are focusing on #decentralization (prevention of takeover) as the most important thing about Mastodon. Here's why I think that's wrong: even a decentralised network can be a "freeze peach" cesspit of hatred, just like Twitter and other libertarian techbro social networks, if it chooses to be. The most important thing about Mastodon is that it chooses not to be. https://nileane.fr/@nileane/110259080083016754 #Bluesky
My core value is personal #freedom. I’m strongly for #FreeSoftware and dream of a world in which free software is the default basically everywhere. I’m for a free and open #Internet, against #censorship and intellectual monopolies. #Decentralization is better than centralization. I hate #hierarchies of #power. ✊
I have a low tolerance for #bullshit and zero tolerance for anti-intellectualism. Critical thinking is important to get things done. If you find bullshit in my posts, tell me. 💩
Was just asked by a friend if I wanted a #BlueSky invite.
My reply?
“Thanks but no thanks.”
Why?
Because I don’t need to see the app. I know the people behind it and what they stand for. The app can only ever be a manifestation of (or an initial misdirection from) that.
Expecting the wolf that took a bite out of you last time to this time act in your interests is how you end up as its dinner.
Between this and the ongoing changes on Twitter, and upcoming changes on Reddit, I hope it's becoming ever more clear that we can't rely on profit-driven corporations when it comes to maintaining our public commons.
"Imgur, an image-hosting site that has been one of the web's go-to spots for linking hi-res images since 2010 [...] intends to remove "explicit images" and "old, unused, and inactive content" as of May 15."
And as the fediverse continues to take off, it would be really worth looking into moving to a smaller instance, maybe even starting your own* with a few friends or family.
The lesson here really should be not letting power concentrate in the hands of a few people.
For the record, I was never on Twitter but came to mastodon out of curiosity of the #fediverse and #decentralization I am still on Instagram (vsixxwynn if you want to follow me there) and am only on Facebook for party invites from friends and groups 😅 I have found this community wonderful and "real". 🖤 Happy Saturday!
If people are smart, it's time to archive the Archive right now. In other words, fork it and turn it unto a decentralized platform. I hope someone out there is working on that.
Plus you have to think libraries need some decentralization as well as this lawsuit could kill libraries as we know them.
We'll see what happens there but the point is the same: the Copyright Cartel and publishers want to kill libraries as we know it and this is the first major step into that goal.
It's time to archive the Archive turn it unto a decentralized platform before it's too late. I hope someone out there is working on that plus libraries need to do this too.
