I'm a little late to this, but I feel the need to mention it because I feel like these people are just going to move to Telegram, if they already haven't.

Telegram is NOT a better alternative to Discord. It asks for your phone number (huge red flag), lies about being end-to-end encrypted (encryption is done server-side), is centralized, and not entirely FOSS (server-side software is closed source). Look into decentralized/self-hosted solutions instead.

I personally recommend hosting an XMPP server. Install an XMPP server stack that supports multi-user-chats and host your discussions there. With XMPP, you can sign up for an account on any server and talk to anyone, including people from other servers. There are even modernized web-clients like Movim which make it more user friendly.

For private/direct messages, you can also end-to-end encrypt them using OMEMO. Just don't use them for public MUCs or you will end up having problems. You really don't need to encrypt a public chat anyway.

If you need help running an XMPP server, Mental Outlaw made a video on it.

Really, even an IRC channel or an AJAX webchat/shoutbox is better than Discord or Telegram.

#Decentralization #Privacy #DataProtection #Solid: ""From the beginning, I always meant for the web to be a platform for creativity and collaboration," says Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the world wide web.

"The first decade of the web lived up to that promise, but that's not what we've seen in the last 20 years or so."

Sir Tim says a particular problem is the way personal data is handled. When you log in and store data in a website, it can only be used within that website.

But an open source software project, called Solid, is designed to reverse that situation.

The idea of Solid is that people have a private data store, and they get to choose which organisations can access it, for what purpose, and for how long.

Called a Personal Online Data Store, or Pod, it gives users control over their data, and the freedom to combine it or share it between applications.

Sir Tim is co-founder of Inrupt, a company that provides Solid-based technologies. He says using the technology would mean that data storage would be "centred around people, instead of around apps".

Other companies providing Solid-based solutions include Graphmetrix and Digita." https://www.bbc.com/news/business-68286395

Are "hard links" important or a nice to have in a filesystem?

I'm trying to assess possible feature compromises for a #decentralized / #p2p based #filesystem that can be mounted on multiple machines, so any views on the usefulness of hard links with examples would be appreciated.

One such compromise here is merging of changes made from different devices, that will be much harder with hard linking.

How important are hard links to you and why?

Update 22 Feb

ValentinesNet is still going strong, so all being well we’ll keep it alive til we run out of space or release a breaking change.

We are moving ahead with updates on the fly, and hope to put it to the test on the current testnet. Basically what will happen is that node IDs and data will be seamlessly retained even as the sn_node software is updated.

In whichever area of related developments you look, you will find different people and communities -- even if there are several individuals who appear in multiple contexts as key contributors or drivers. There is no single person who gets to decide about everything even if we do have lead roles for particular aspects. Our experimental community approaches respect Convays Law: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conway%27s_law -- meaning: our tech will be only as good as our social practises

We have a suspicion that the high-mem nodes are those that subscribed to gossip for royalties. This testnet is aiming to probe that hypothesis by removing gossip royalties!

The aim here is largely to see if we have avoided such high memory nodes.

Since we integrated with ActivityPub at the end of last year, Minds has added 32,000+ new users to the network via federation, from 2,200+ different ActivityPub networks.

With our new Networks product (https://minds.com/about/networks), anyone can launch their own network in a matter of minutes. These networks can federate with Minds and the rest of ActivityPub too. Your data, your community, your rules.

Update 8 February

Yesterday we launched our latest testnet to analyse the effect of encryption on node memory performance. This builds on the previous QuicNet, which saw a move from TCP to QUIC, and drew a rapturous response.

QUIC is evidently the future. Nevertheless, this being cutting-edge engineering, for every step forward the law says there has to be half a step back ...

After QuicNet blazed itself to the ground, we’re back with a network that Does not encrypt data at nodes. (In order to see how much that contributed to mem-spikes we saw). Derives payment keys from the PeerId key, so restarted nodes should be able to accept payments now. Has more logs Here we’re looking to see How this lack...
