If you think #GamerGate was just some unimportant internet stuff, you forget the fact it created Breitbard News and decided the campaign manager for Donald Trump's successful 2016 presidential campaign.
This isn't “Internet stuff” anymore. The alt right creeps into the real world, as it has always been a part of it.
A "gamergate" (pronounced like "gamete") is a mated worker ant with the potential to become a queen of the colony. This is believed to be how early ant colonies worked before the physical differences between queens and workers became more pronounced in the majority of ant species. Diacamma, Harpegnathos and Ophthalmopone genus ants still have this ability.
This is the only significant meaning the word "gamergate" has and will ever have.
I'm a little late to this, but I feel the need to mention it because I feel like these people are just going to move to Telegram, if they already haven't.
Telegram is NOT a better alternative to Discord. It asks for your phone number (huge red flag), lies about being end-to-end encrypted (encryption is done server-side), is centralized, and not entirely FOSS (server-side software is closed source). Look into decentralized/self-hosted solutions instead.
I personally recommend hosting an XMPP server. Install an XMPP server stack that supports multi-user-chats and host your discussions there. With XMPP, you can sign up for an account on any server and talk to anyone, including people from other servers. There are even modernized web-clients like Movim which make it more user friendly.
For private/direct messages, you can also end-to-end encrypt them using OMEMO. Just don't use them for public MUCs or you will end up having problems. You really don't need to encrypt a public chat anyway.

I feel a lot of people look back at Gamergate and just think "gamers are easy to radicalize" as the only take-away, but if you look deeply I think a much more importantly lesson is there to learn:
It's easy to take a valid problem, attribute the wrong source, and drive people to a malicious solution.

I think it presents fewer problems, and better explains the increased intelligence of the ants. Ants are among the most intelligent of insects even before you account for the complex decisions made on the colony-level. Nest site selection (when a mature colony moves) is very sophisticated.
