So recently i had some time to play again with #bookbinding, tried to make couple of notebooks, one using some decorated paper i bought at a #crafting store, and the other one based on my #osdev_notes#book project, i call it the "Osdev Notebook", it's still in a drafting stage, but the idea is nice (i have designed the inner pages too).
I've posted it on my ko-fi page too: https://ko-fi.com/post/Some-homemade-notebooks-R6R8XQZG3 (don't worry i use it as my blog, so nothing to pay). #art#handmade
Book post! This is "Salvage" by MuffinLance. The typeset file was shared by someone in the bookbinding discord, so I just focused on the cover. #bookbinding#HydeMakesBooks
I may have fallen down a minor #bookbinding rabbit hole in which i discovered that "thermal binding machines" are a thing. They're ~$100-200 in the US BUT the exact same machines are available on Ali Express for $55 with (checks notes) $2 shipping (from china).
Also, hot-melt glue strips for use in these machines? $5 for100 vs ~$10 for 20 on US Amazon.
The one in the pic here is rebranded as the "We R Memory - Thermal Cinch" in the US and for $80-$100. 🤦♀️

Today is the 3rd anniversary of Black Oak Bindery! Here are a few pictures of some of my favorite things I made this past year.
Looking back over the year, I: got really into endbands, entered my first bookbinding show, vendored at a convention for the first time with books, took several binding workshops, started a bookbinder's meetup, and started doing rebinds.
Just hit print on the Daggerheart open beta playtest material.
I re-watched a video of someone doing a simple hand saddle-stitch #bookbinding on a huge stack of printer paper. As long as you have a way to make the holes for the thread to go through, it's not a big deal. So... 🤷♀️ I guess I'm going to be doing my first saddle-stitch binding soon‡.
note: i added a custom front page with the logo, so that's why it may not match yours.
Second book bound. Plenty of imperfections, but I’m relatively happy with it. I love that it has a motif - down to the headbands inside the binding. #bookbinding
Spent last week making a book from the cake box from last year’s birthday. I saved it saying, "I’m going to make a journal out of this," then didn’t.
At the #californiapenshow, there was a couple selling books they’d made. He was just SO ENCOURAGING about doing it. He suggested classes in San Francisco. He also suggested YouTube, which is where I ended up.
Book two is already designed. I’ll likely give it a week, then dive in.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
I loved the folktale quality to this book and sought to reflect that in the design by using a lot of pattern. The story also has motifs of silver turning into gold and ice & fire.
We had our first quiet Saturday in a long time. This afternoon we made some time for art and creativity! @dohappybelove did the watercolor painting and @seanbala made a long-stitch book. The inside of Sean's book was made from an old calendar that we had lying around.

This started as a burst binding and I converted it to sewn on flat cords. I was reading this during my off time at a recent class at the American Academy of Bookbinding and decided I wanted to take a swing at breaking down this type of binding since so many of the books I enjoy are published this way. There are signatures after all...there's just also A LOT of glue...
Last two books for my Bookmaking Class at Lillstreet! First one is a French chain long stitch book. I LOVE the cover and the pattern on spine but had some trouble with the paper.
Craft Project! I have a beloved Kobo Libra H2O. It has a proprietary case covered in a blue fake leather that began to flake. I took it off and for a while went with the cloth underneath. But that was beginning to fray and so I decided to fix it with my ninja bookmaking skills. Probably should have used a thinner cloth for the magnet but it looks beautiful!
