I'm trying to create a low-poly version of this mesh for a light (left-hand image) by cage baking the normal in #blender3d #b3d

I don't think... I can get it better than the image on the right. But would love to hear if there's a way to mimic a mesh more convincingly.

Is it cake? One of these has an actual mesh (I think on the right here), while the other is in truth a solid cylinder with a texture. The better results were from creating the texture myself, rather than baking it on. It doesn't look quite as good in the scene in as in : the lighting doesn't work quite the same way, and you can tell it's a texture when you stand close-up. But it's also over a factor of 100 less polygons, which is needed for a big room design.

This week, we're hitting the #Blender3D shop floor for a big design that (I hope) will ultimately become a #VR space for a conference.

So far... it's a doughnut.

Spent most of the day creating a highly pretty railing in that... is probably too poly-heavy for !

May have to either intersperse the Solar System railings with plain ones (which might look quite good...) or perhaps try using an alpha texture, if I can create a normal map from the actual 3D model 🤔 (i.e. fake it with a picture)

... I present to you a prototype for my Fueling Brains & Academies business cards. Now I just need to figure out the stringing and cleaner prints around the curved logo and text.

So I'm in work on a Saturday because I wanted to create a graphic of a glass planet.

(Please blithely accept this to get to the punch line of this tale.)

The reflections with Blender Cycles were squishing my home computers flat, so I went in to try my new work Mac Studio.

And may I just say...

SWEEEEEEET.

GPU-intensive work usually shouts "windows machine" but the Studio is crushing it. It's a pity it won't do PCVR.
