We continue to pursue Japanese studies through… Doreamon! A children’s manga in which a cat-like robot from the future helps a spectacularly dim child.

How dim?

In this scene, he is discovering that if you do not water crops… they die 🤨

@Purple_Sky for a story aimed at quite young children, it’s surprisingly good!!

I’m listening to “Wildacre”; historical fiction by Philippa Gregory.

The protagonist is evil. An utter psychopath. Admittedly, life for a woman in the 18th century is rough, and the opportunities Beatrice’s skills warrant are passed to incompetent men. But the body count is unpleasant!

It’s a very long book and a stressful read. Frankly, I want to stop but I also want to know the outcome and I’m not sure a synopsis will be satisfactory.

In short, I’m in a hostage situation with an audiobook.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@grb090423 the audiobook is in three (!!!) parts. I’ve decided to at least finish the first part and then consider my options 😂 But so far, the father is dead, the person who helped kill the father is possibly dead (and certainly has no legs), the mother almost died, and she’s bedding the brother 😳 I don’t know how there’ll be enough characters to take us through all three parts!

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@ohmu yes!!! I mean, I know I could just move onto something else but….

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

People. I finished the first of three (THREE!!) parts of this audio book that amounted to 8.5 hours listening time.

We leave Beatrice in Paris, having weaselled her way onto her brother’s honeymoon, pregnant with her brother’s child, and fearing her last lover who seems to have survived having his legs chopped off in a man trap to become a Robin Hood-type highwayman.

I… require something more uplifting and am returning (at least temporarily) to the Thursday Murder Club.

@grb090423 I only print spoilers when I wouldn’t wish the book on my friends 😂

I’m having to join the morning push into Yokohama and was not expecting the trains to be as crushed as central Tokyo.

I was not correct about that assumption! I am now Elizabeth in 2D.

I cannot put my feet flat on the floor 😳 Not cool, people.

#EPSC (Europlanet Science Congress) is being held hybrid this year, and has an exciting program that includes a session on using new tools such as #VR in planetary science outreach.

But... it's 50 Euro per abstract submission, with no guarantee of acceptance. That's a fairly big punch when the Japanese yen is super weak.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@YetAnotherGeekGuy It does take considerable time to review abstracts and put together the program. But usually, I'd expect any payment for that to come from the registration fee.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@nab26 @YetAnotherGeekGuy I’m honestly not sure. It would be refreshing if the reviewers were offered some compensation, but I do agree it’s unusual.

Look, this is pretty much how "Day of the Triffids" started, people. Don't you forget that.

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@conflummoxed fortunately (or really, sadly) we didn’t see anything in Tokyo!

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@coprolite9000 and so it begins…

elizabethtasker,
@elizabethtasker@mastodon.online avatar

@conflummoxed the big question is whether you'll still have sight in the morning, or if you will now be triffid feed!
