Remember August 13, 1996 (27 years ago)? That's when Microsoft thought it would be fun to release Internet Explorer 3!
In a world where other browsers were like sleek sports cars, IE3 was the well-meaning family van. Sure, it got the job done, but let's face it – there were snazzier options out there.
Yet, IE3 brought its own quirks to the table, leaving us with fond memories of countless pop-ups.
For years I've returned to #Firefox as my web browser; I generally dig #Mozilla and think it's important to support #Gecko. Recently, I must admit I fell in love with many features of #Vivaldi from their nifty little worker-run company, such as workspaces, but it still lacked Firefox's containers and other features. Now I've discovered #Floorp and I'm absolutely loving it: based on Firefox, has all the appealing aesthetics of Vivaldi and the workspaces, but also containers! It makes my Gecko-lovin' geek heart happy. #WebBrowser#WebBrowsers#browsers
#Zoom just changed their terms and conditions to include using anyone's video and audio for training #AI with no option for opting out. You too can help train #deepfake s!
Living with a disabled spouse, I used Zoom a lot to get through the ongoing global pandemic.
What alternatives are out there for remote teaching/meetings? #BoycottZoom
I've been using Via, but looking to see what's best out there. I don't need anything fancy, just a browser with an ad blocker and the ability to force dark mode.
After 11 years and 15 days from 2012-07-12, I am proud to present the first real release of MoeNavigator - a web browser written from scratch in C++. Its engine (called MoeNavigatorEngine) is also written from scratch:
Which is the best browser for #productivity? #Privacy? Customization?
This comparison will help solve this mystery 💪
#Speed, #usability, and #security are important factors to consider when comparing web browsers. However, choosing the best #webbrowser requires taking more factors into consideration.
Just a reminder from someone who cares a lot about online privacy and security: Mozilla ousted that bigot Brendan Eich, and he now runs Brave. Do what you have to do to tighten up your web browser, Firefox or otherwise. But don't support a bigot. Don't use Brave browser. #WebBrowser#WebBrowsers#Firefox#Mozilla
@rml I just listened to this the other day, very exciting! We will soon be able to do #FullStack development using #GuileScheme as the only language for the whole application!
I 100% agree with what @cwebber said about WebAssembly realizing the dream of Java's write-once-run-everywhere ethos. WebAssembly is the JavaVM done properly, with real support from the whole software development community at large.
A bit off topic, but I hope someday someone comes up with a fully #GPL#WebAssembly app platform that replaces #WebKit with something a fraction of it's size which runs on all the major operating systems. That is a tall order, yes, but not as hard as coming up with a whole new #WebBrowser engine. And it could replace both Node.js and the Java JRE.
I took a look at the major web browsers, and how they handle user privacy, from blocking tracking scripts, cookies and pixels, blocking ads, to the data they collect, and how they resist fingerprinting.
Most people will tell you that there are only two actively developed web browsers, Firefox and Chromium, and that all others are built on the source code of one of these two (or at least their rendering engine). But I'm aware of at least 2 working browsers that (AFAIK) are not based on either;
Best #Firefox config setting I know: browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs
All my bookmarks when clicking on them will open in a new tab instead of the existing tab. This helps with using multiple sites at once and never loosing your spot either.
Getting the opportunity to try #ArcBrowser as of today. Immediate impressions are favorable. I’m digging the ideas of automated tab cleanup and spaces.
It’s super clean looking, too, due to the heavy focus on a sidebar rather than a top bar.
Oh, and think I’m going to like having CMD + T not only launch a new tab, but also act as a Launchy-esque in-browser launcher.
