At least 20 people have died, and more than 30,000 have been infected by a wave of dengue in Central America, where Guatemala and Panama have the highest death toll this year. Authorities are blaming #ClimateChange & the lack of rain which has reduced water supply, limiting the number of ships (as well as the size of the vessels too).
I was wondering why Panama 🇵🇦 has not pumped in sea water to resolve the issue, although a #YouTube commenter explained the folly of that “solution” as salt water would damage the ecosystem.

For months, a withering #drought has created major traffic jams at the #Panama#Canal.
The drought, which may have been exacerbated by climate change, has left the canal’s water levels lower than ever, forcing Panama to let fewer ships through.
The restrictions have led to #delays, increased shipping #costs, and uncertainty over the future of one of the world’s critical #trade chokepoints.
Il costo per avere la precedenza per accedere al canale di #Panama è sceso dai $4.000.000 di novembre a soli $269.000 (oltre naturalmente alla tariffa solita).

"A.P. Moller-Maersk will use trains to avoid the drought-hit #Panama Canal for some of its vessels, the Danish shipping giant said as low water levels have caused one of the world's main maritime trade routes to reduce crossings. The workaround comes as vessel owners also are rerouting ships to avoid militant attacks that are disrupting the #Suez Canal...in what has become the largest disruption to ocean shipping since the COVID-19 pandemic"
The news comes days after the Ukrainian military warned about an increased risk for civilians posed by drifting naval mines in the Black Sea due to lengthy storms.
In the Black Sea, a civilian vessel under the flag of #Panama was hit by a Russian sea mine.
The ship was on its way to one of the #Danube ports to be loaded with grain.
The ship lost speed and control, a fire broke out on the upper deck. To avoid flooding, the captain anchored the ship aground.
After 250 000 Panamians took the streets (a massive 6 % of the population!) to protst Central America's largest open pit copper mine owned by First Quantum Minerals, the supreme court ruled that the mine has to be shut down.
Thanks to @corpwatch ! (definitely worth a follow🖤 )
