So sick of seeing reports that Kevin McCarthy has run out of options as "congress" hurtles toward a shutdown. He could put the Senate's bipartisan CR on the floor today, pass it--and keep his job--with Democratic votes and effectively neuter his Crazy Caucus. Dems care about governing and not harming millions of people.
It would invite tons of blowback, but he has a security detail. #governmentshutdown
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives is a coward: “At any point, McCarthy could bring up before the House the bipartisan measure already passed by the Senate. Democrats would then likely make up the votes he would lose in his own conference. But the extremists would then challenge his speakership, and that is apparently a challenge he is unwilling to brave.”
Apparently some Reps are saying their staff are “essential” so that they can keep working on the “impeachment” during the Government Shutdown that they caused.
WASHINGTON, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Hardline Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday rejected a bill proposed by their leader to temporarily fund the government, making it all but certain that federal agencies will partially shut down beginning on Sunday....
A reminder to all journalists: most in the GOP don't MIND a government shut down because a core of their philosophy is disemboweling government and then complaining how government doesn't work. The impacts to people, the economy, and the environment don't matter to them. #shutdown #governmentshutdown
🛑 🏛️ In the event of a government shutdown, it's not just federal employees & contractors who face upheaval. WIC, the USDA program that provides health care services and food to millions of low-income women and their children, will end immediately, Deena Zaru Pettiford reports in ABC News.
Kevin McCarthy actually said this: “If we have to play into overtime to curb spending and secure the border, I’m prepared to do it.” Let’s get one thing straight. There is NO OVERTIME. Overtime means you shut the government down and don’t pay federal workers, including military personnel, for their service and time. What a joke. What a loser.
@georgetakei
Everyone, and I mean everyone, who is not getting a paycheck should not go to work.
#EssentialWorkers died for us during #COVID19. The #WorkingClass is essential. Air traffic controllers are NOT slaves. Neither are SSA workers, park rangers, FDA inspectors, ...
If you're not getting paid what are you working for? Let the billionaires take responsibility for a change.
If these Republican house members who are holding the government hostage b/c they're angry about "border security" had an ounce of reflection, they would
work with other members to reform immigration law
fund greater border control measures, including an influx of judges and other staff to manage these surges
As voters, we need to ask whether they ever actually wanted to work to solve the country's problems.
Reminder that this only ever happens when they control the house, and they even did it under Trump. It's a result of partisanship in an environment where a chunk of one party wants to overthrow democracy / rule of law: even as a small minority within the house, they have this amplified power because the party has to either surrender to them or give in and work across the aisle.
Facing a potential #GovernmentShutdown in 4 days triggered by #HouseRepublicans’ inability to unite to pass spending bills, House “Speaker” Kevin #McCarthy is trying to shift the blame.
Asked by Lisa Desjardins of PBSNewsHour whether there will be a #GovernmentShutdown, #McCarthy responded, “I don’t know. Ask President Biden.”
Of course, #Biden has played no role in bringing #Congress to the brink of a #shutdown.
In fact, McCarthy has sidelined #Democrats & refused to take up a bipartisan stopgap funding bill because he’s afraid #FarRight#Republicans will try to oust him from the speakership.
Surrounded by a gaggle of reporters, #KevinMcCarthy has no defense for #HouseRepublicans failure to function at the most basic level. He literally just repeated over & over “but the border” & hypothetical allegories about “the border”
