#MarjorieTraitorGreene is apoplectic over Commander #MikeJohnson working with the #Democrats in order to avoid a #governmentShutdown, which would have been a disaster for #Republicans heading into the November election. But Marj doesn't care about reality. She considers working across the aisle a capital offense, and would rather see the country collapse than compromise with Democrats. Not really a great perspective for someone in #Congress.
The bipartisan bill emerged one day before the federal funding deadline, & it was not clear whether Congress could complete it in time to avoid a partial #shutdown after midnight on Friday.
Congressional Leaders Strike Deal on Final Spending Bill Ahead of #GovernmentShutdown
Lawmakers resolved disputes over #DHS funding, paving the way for an agreement. But they may still be unable to meet a Friday deadline to avert a brief partial #shutdown.
#HouseRepublicans, the #Senate, #Democrats & the #WhiteHouse had been at loggerheads over funding levels for the #DHS. For days, they had been litigating disagreements that threatened to imperil the spending package that also funds the #Pentagon, the #StateDepartment & other #FederalAgencies. They are facing a midnight deadline on Fri to pass the measure & avert a lapse in funding.
A breakthrough on Mon night, in which Democrats & #Republicans were able to agree to #HomelandSecurity funding levels for the rest of the fiscal year, allowed negotiators to finalize their deal.
“An agreement has been reached” that will enable #Congress to fund the #government through Sept 30, Speaker #MikeJohnson said in a stmnt. “#House & #Senate cmtes have begun drafting bill text to be prepared for release & consideration by the full House & Senate as soon as possible.”
The measure would package together 6 spending bills, extending funding through Sept 30 for dozens of federal programs covering #agriculture, #energy & the #environment, #transportation, #housing, the #DOJ & #veterans. Top lawmakers were still negotiating spending bills for the other half of the #government over the same period, including for the #Pentagon, which #Congress must pass by March 22 to avert a lapse in #funding.
Government Shutdown Deadline Looms
National Multifamily Housing Council - March 4, 2024
"As we know from years past, a government shutdown could severely and negatively impact the economy, as well as several different sectors with the apartment industry."
The package totals ~$460B, a better-late-than-never agreement reached …after months of delays, negotiations & stopgaps that took the govt to the brink of a #shutdown mult times…. #Republicans said they hope to limit nondefense spending in fiscal yr 2024 to ~$704B, $40B less than fiscal yr 2023. #House & #Senate ldrs had already agreed earlier this yr to spend ~$1.7T in …discretionary spending, which includes domestic prgms & #military spending but not …prgms such as #SocialSecurity & #Medicare.
#Congress plans to use 2 packages of #legislation to fund the entire govt. The #House must vote on the first package this week, then move it to the #Senate for a vote. Legislative action must be complete before the Mar 8 funding deadline that was set late last week to avoid a partial #GovernmentShutdown.
The House on Thurs approved #legislation to extend the expiration date for #FederalFunding later into March, sending the measure to prevent a partial govt shutdown that was set for Sat to the #Senate, where it is expected the pass.
Another, larger #shutdown cliff awaits just a wk later, when funds for the rest of the govt, including the #Defense & #State depts, will also expire, unless #Congress acts.
But Thursday’s bill would push the funding deadline for several agencies — including the depts of #Veterans Affairs, #Transportation, #Energy, #Agriculture, #Interior, #Housing & #UrbanDevelopment, & the #EPA — until Mar 8. Finances for the rest of the federal govt would expire on Mar 22, 2 wks later than under current #law.
The #Senate passed the #legislation, 77-18, early Thursday afternoon. The #House followed suit, 314-108, (please pause & acknowledge the difference between #HouseRepublicans 49% & #Republicans in the Senate 36%) hours later, after #GOP hard-liners launched a last-minute pressure campaign to attach partisan border security measures to the funding package. The votes send the #legislation to President #Biden to sign into law and avert a partial shutdown ahead of the deadline.
The Senate on Thurs passed #legislation to keep the #federal govt open into March, kicking the measure to the House as #Congress continues its struggle to approve long-term spending #laws.
The U.S. Senate voted late last night to avoid a government shutdown.
ABC News reports the move "will keep the government funded at 2023 levels. The bill extends government funding until Jan. 19 for the Veterans Affairs, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Energy departments, as well as for military construction. The rest of the government is funded until Feb. 2."
The Biden administration and fellow Democrats are panning a proposal by House GOP leaders for a two-part U.S. government spending bill that would fund certain agencies through one date and other agencies through another.
@TonyStark@ClintBarton These days, the GOP is simply a front for dark money, it's not a governing body. The morbidly wealthy select their preferred candidates, get them elected, then provide their instructions. The GOP no longer responds to the needs or desires of constituents, they're entirely in the pocket of their owners. They're also disposable so they're no longer motivated to genuinely represent their constituents. Viewed this way, their self-destructive behavior makes sense.
