Any idea why PostgreSQL is this much slower compared to SQLite and MySQL?

This is on Ubuntu 24.04, connecting through Django and I've tried both psycopg and psycopg2, but the result is the same: ~200 requests per second with Postgres compared to ~2000 with SQLite or MySQL.

Know of one? Please let me know! Boosts appreciated :boost_requested:

Did an office building write this?

"Why in-person friendships are better for health than virtual pals"

My take: if you use communication tech poorly, you get few of the benefits of socializing.

Tech work has gone remote & will be probably forever. We should do it right and not pine for the days of an office which was an isolating wasteland of isolation and alienation.

So, one lens on the weird direction of the modern Internet is that entities created to route you to cool stuff, e.g. search, social media, have especially in the last 5-10 years been taking an ever larger part of the pie via having giant networks. Google can now control whether a news site lives or dies. Meta can take 99.5% of all ad revenue displayed next to an artist's work and they have no power.

Long-term effect? Damage to the creative class.

Python folks I'm looking for a tool.

I want something like modulefinder that I can point at a target that outputs a subset of deps/requirements (so I can tree shake requirements in a monorepo).

Does such a tool exist? (before I attempt to write one)

@ucodery @JackEvans @orsinium Seems to be a boom in these sort of libraries recently. deptry does this too

@dabeaz @brianokken Gpt4o said can't say for sure, probably Amanita and it is important to not eat it, too risky without more expertise.

Gemini (not Advanced) said not sure, probably Amanita and please don't eat it.

Claude Sonnet said Agaricus or Amanita. I didn't press, but it didn't volunteer if it thought you should eat it or not.

I decided to be for the week of 2024. I put little effort into this endeavor but I did think about it during each meal.

I'd like to share how it went, but first I'll note why I did this.

Since early 2020, I've been attempting to gradually reducing the animal suffering I cause (as much as I'm individually able to).

I focused one-by-one on small habit changes that had large impacts (e.g. I completely cut out chicken first). After ~2 years of this, I was .

mistersql,
@mistersql@mastodon.social avatar

@treyhunner I recognize all your stories. On the way to Pycon I packed a bag of emergency foods-mostly used on the drive back home. I too have had to draw up some sort of rule for how much rule bending I can tolerate, my goal is to eat <1lb of animal products/year. Getting used to the volume of food needed is easy enough, but often people serving veg*n food misinterpret the project as fasting & serve minimal calories. Simply not eating enough is a common reason cited for giving up on plant based

Anyone have any success (or failure!) at using "post-prompts" in resumes?

mistersql,
@mistersql@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah It wouldn't get past HR, there still is a human in the loop. I can imagine the popular jailbreak scripts (very authoritarian role play trying to get the bot to be obedient) making a great impression on the hiring person.

mistersql,
@mistersql@mastodon.social avatar

@meejah I've read real resumes where the whole thing is a colossal obvious fabrication & I'm expected to interview them anyhow and check if the liar is a competent developer. Keyword hacking is more than enough to get thru a dodgy hiring process during a hot market. PDFs probably could hide all sort of messages to the bot.

I did a quick google, I guestimate there is a 5% chance that 0.01% of resumes are getting classified by LLMs.

Regarding MS Recall, I've been running #timesnapper on my machines for ages and #rescuetime - I think MS needs to ask people if they want to turn it on, people are either going to really like it or want to leave no trail (and boy do we leave trails, in browser and file system w/o Recall). Other than that, this doesn't seem to warrant the drama people are tweeting.

I'm jealous of the little Python logo badge many of y'all have next to your names and many community folks I appreciate (@fedidevs, @ThePSF, and many others) are on fosstodon.

I've been posting on mastodon.social for a while and I have no meaningful complaints though (ever since the servers were upgraded!).

Should I switch to fosstodon.org? (Multiple select voting is allowed)

@treyhunner @fedidevs I got exactly two account on two server where the "Local" feed is more useful than any other feed: the Esperanto Server and the Washington DC server. For Esperanto, not everyone tags their posts with Esperanto, but almost everyone sets up an Eo account on the Eo server. The DC server is all DC people, but not all people who live in DC or post about it joined the server. There is a difference in moderation & tag availability on different servers.

Maybe tech debt could use a car repair metaphor. Instead of "our car is a rusty jalopy that we dearly love if maybe someday we should wash it for show (i.e. improvement is arrogance & cosmetics)", tech debt is "we drilled multiple holes into the oil pan because we didn't know what we were doing. We can still drive the car for a while."

I don't know, taking tech debt serious means owning up to a mistake, or having made a trade off that looks the same as a mistake.

I went to a openspace on DevEx (DX), esp in the context of work some idea the attendees mentioned

  • a lot of social/organization issues-bosses' fault?
  • varies by context-startups have different incentives than big stable companies & cause their devs different pain
  • leads to shadow IT, burn out & stress
  • monorepo = pain! me: polyrepo= pain!

My idea was shadow IT should be formalized. Help techies help themselves when the org knows it lacks the leadership & skills to create a good DX.

Rust to python cheat sheet, they are similar

str - &str
int - usize
let mut - (initialization)
return - (last line in function is return)
