This kind of behaviour — as well as questionable things with mastodon.social and #Mastodon in general — is a reminder that a Mastodon™-based monoculture is detrimental to the health #Fediverse as a whole. Use any of the multitude of apps, instances and software that make the Fediverse, not just the official Mastodon app + mastodon.social + Mastodon trinity… ☘️
Fediverse servers tend to have a lot more human moderators than centralised commercial social networks. Here's why:
Staff ratio means the number of human moderators per user.
A typical Fediverse server has about 500-1000 members. Let's assume an average staff ratio of 1:1000.
Facebook has 3 billion members, so in order to get a staff ratio of 1:1000 it would need 3 million moderators. The current total number of employees of any kind at Facebook/Meta is only 77,114.
@feditips “The current total number of employees of any kind at Facebook/Meta is only 77,114.” —
According to https://the-federation.info, the #Fediverse has currently a bit less than 24,000 nodes and therefore approximately the same number of node administrators. Most of them do the administration only part-time, but nevertheless, if we count them as employees of an imaginary “Fediverse Corporation”, this makes the Fediverse quite a big entity and of the same order of magnitude as some social media companies.
This is why I view it as misleading when for example #Mastodon is described as a small project, just because the Mastodon gGmbh consists of less than a handful of people.
I often complain that Americans have this very bad tendency of thinking that they are the default country, thinking that they don't need to mention what country they're talking about when talking about a societal issue. Either because they think other countries are irrelevant, or somehow worse, thinking that their country's issues apply to every other country and everyone else.
Here is a good example.
However, this example is interesting, because you instantly understand what country is being talked about here.
@pvonhellermannn Exactly,
For years, almost two decades, English-speaking social media was centered around the US, and to a certain extent, it made sense as the big English-speaking #socialmedia companies were #US companies.
But #Mastodon and the #Fediverse are not. They truly are international. Mastodon even was mostly European until recently (still is? I don't have recent metrics).
And honestly, that is one of the things I love about the Fediverse. Not only no big company or billionaire can buy it out, but also, no country can claim it as theirs.
I hope Americans coming here start realizing this. Some do, but way too many have brought their bad habits with them. Let's hope they're willing to learn.
But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".
How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?
No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.
Some people think #Bluesky is “fun”. However, I find it anxiety-inducing and stressful. I’m not the only one who thinks so. A few autistic people say the same thing.
#Calckey seems “fun” to me because I can make it be what I need it to be. For example, it’s nice that I can create antennas devoted to my special interests.
I've been doing some research on #bluesky, nothing too deep. It piques my interest that they're trying to stand up an entire new federated protocol rather than just use (or even extend) ActivityPub. Not only does this make them incompatible with the Fediverse, it stands them in opposition to it with their own Fediverse-of-one. Remains to be seen if they'll be the VHS or the Betamax of this war.
Yes, they want more control. I personally think portability is just an excuse. I'm not holding my breath about them allowing people to 100% install BlueSky on their server, it's against their business model.
About the meta discussion, he's right about #Fediverse being "suspicious of Bluesky". They haven't given much reason not to be.
OK....let's say, someone is fed up with his paid host providing a crappy UX for Masto that doesn't allow him to incorporate other Fedi apps like Calckey.
Suppose said someone wanted to host his own server where he could incorporate his own self-hosted instance through his domain for free, rather than through a host.
Anyone wants to provide me.....errrrrrrrr, that someone some advice, or guide me to where to start?
Could said someone run his own server off his laptop or reserve space on an external hard drive (4TB), using a service like Docker or something similar?
Or, would he need something a bit more robust that would cost him some money to create and expand?
Just asking for a friend of a friend of a friend....
So! I set up my radio show "Six Degrees of Ohio" on #Calckey . You can find me at: @six_degrees_of_ohio
I have been waiting around forever to get the show set up on the #fediverse and Calckey seems like the way to go. Will start posting soon.
Follow that account of you have any interest in Ohio music.
I've decided to go back to blogging using the #Wordpress
platform (rather than static HTML), thanks to the incredible #ActivityPub plugin that makes the blog part of the #fediverse.
While there are still lots of kinks to work out (and more than 20+ years worth of old blog posts to eventually migrate), I'm happy with the results thus far.
So... if you would like to follow my blog posts on the fediverse, please follow my account at: @jmb
This Fediverse Software Comparison chart from https://calckey.org/#comparison is great. I'd love to see a similar chart for developers. Comparison of API endpoints, OAuth support, etc.
As folks are noting, #Calckey currently has a big problem with accessibility. If you want to be part of solving a problem then you have to address it with those who have the power to solve it. Limiting & defederating a platform in the early stages of its development without receipts isn't solving anything, particularly where missteps re: development priorities have been common across the #fediverse.
I'm a Calckey user and a critic where I have to be. Let's continue to discuss and raise awareness of these issues and it be clear to all developers that prioritising features over basic #inclusion and online safety features just has to stop, regardless of platform. Let them know that it's important even though it's not sexy, whether your project is 6 months old like Calckey or 6 years like Mastodon)
I’ve barely moved myself to #Mastodon, and people already complain and consider migrating somewhere else in the #Fediverse. I’m afraid it will end up like Linux, taking over desktop computers this year for last 20 years…🤣
