> Adobe Tells Users They Can Get Sued for Using Old Versions of Photoshop
We need #FLOSS tools to get to the point where they can replace Adobe tools. Open alternatives are great, but they are sadly not there yet to replace Adobe tools for professionals.
And won't be unless projects like @inkscape get enough funding to develop to a point of being viable alternatives.
@rysiek (Was # FLOSS a typo? Did you mean #foss )?
I am always on the lookout for good open source art programs. Medibang Paint has been pretty decent for my samsung tablet (Free). Clip Studio Paint has a $5 sub on mobile. It has been ok.
Its harder to find decent FOSS art programs. Blender3d is what I learned on, and is in many ways better than Maya. GIMP/Glimpse UI is still wonky.
But unfortunately, as long as companies think Adobe is the standard, they'll keep forcing artists to use it.
@jtphillipsmnr
Some people use the acronym #FLOSS (free/libre open source software) instead of #FOSS. My understanding is that the addition of "libre" is to emphasize that the "free" in FOSS doesn't necessarily mean "free of charge" but "free" as in "freedom/liberty". (Someone correct me if I'm wrong) @rysiek
At the time I felt I was somewhat like the "annoying fly in the ointment" 😜 because I came with more non-technical considerations related to positioning of the #technology and strategy towards long-term adoption.
Something I've since done too for the #Solid project, and am now doing for the #Fediverse, I am afraid 😬
Generally speaking I feel a weakness in #FOSS is deepdiving tech, with unclarity on bigger picture and needs that must be addressed.
I had a disappointing conversation with a great #OpenSource maintainer last week that want's UX help and is doing EVERYTHING right but still couldn't attract someone.
This is what all of us #UXDesign folk are seeking! A maintainer that 'gets it' and wants our help. The problem? Everyone he interviewed wanted to do a huge rethink of the design, and when it became clear it would be a lot of work, just faded away.
It's not just 'those programmers', it's us too, UXers need to leave ego behind
@J12t It's one reason why I'm coming to the conclusion the UX on a #FOSS project is best done by a full time member and why funded projects tend to do better in UX as they can pay someone to stick around.
It's quite hard to treat UX like programmers which can do very granular work and still be very valuable.
Like a month ago, I was talking about the trend of people getting "dumb phones" because they were tired of being attached to social media.
I was very confused and frustrated because there are settings on the phone where you can turn off alerts and the like. Customization.
The Amish appear to have a good approach to technology. Yes they have modern tech. Yes they still dress like its the 1800s. They just don't let it control their lives.
OMG The Amish (and Mennonites) have computers that use #Linux and #foss !
Like the Mennonite designer specifically made the choice to have USB peripherals to their computers, but to make it incompatible with Windows! I believed the man worked with MIT to design this very culturally customized computer.
This is wild and interesting!
It has CAD software on it but also a Bible reader and search engine!? (Not internet connected.)
With todo lists and that grid/column layout for displaying multiple notes. Needs Android and iOS clients. Preferably w. #selfhosting / #selfhosted server.
Already using Joplin - but need a simple post-it looking solution. Think shopping lists and reminders not full featured notes and zettelkasten.
@mp362@RockyC Thing with Nemo, for me, was that I couldn’t get used to the sorting options of (dot) files and folders. But then again #Linux allows you to plug in any file manager you want! It just baffles me how much good #FOSS software is out there.
#LMDE6 will also be released this summer based on #debian Bookworm. I just wonder when this will be the flagship distro (in favor of current Ubuntu-based #LinuxMint).
Gotta try #xfce as well one of these days. Where did I put that USB stick 🥳
Ugh, Ubuntu replaced my Firefox PPA with a broken-out-of-the-box Snap again today when upgrading from kinetic to lunar.
Any recommendations on an alternative to Ubuntu for a dev-centric personal laptop? Apt-based is preferred, but I'll take anything that guarantees I'll never need to see a Snap package again.
“OpenAI’s new privacy and data protection extends only to customers who use the company’s API services. ‘We may use Content from Services other than our API,’ the company’s updated Terms of Use note. That could include, for example, text that employees enter into the wildly popular chatbot ChatGPT. Amazon reportedly recently warned employees not to share confidential information with ChatGPT for fear that it might show up in answers.”
It's great that Linux now has plenty of creative #FOSS apps that let us avoid the Scourge of Adobe.
The problem comes in that the absolute disaster of #Wayland adoption, which we're all supposed to love and migrate to, is thoroughly incompatible with so many creative packages like #Krita or #TrenchBroom.
And it's not like Wayland is brand new. I don't know how we can go this long with an "upgrade" and still have so many important apps broken, apps that are vital to some people's careers.
My new open source operating stack consists of #almalinux , #debian, #linuxmint, #freebsd, and #openbsd. Each of these 4 operating systems have their distinct advantages and place. I love the #foss life.
