Corporate #FLOSS at its worst: #NVIDIA controls the #Thrust library and its #CUDA, #OpenMP and #TBB backend. #AMD provides rocThrust, that is just Thrust with the CUDA part stripped and a new backend for #ROCm / #HIP. Nobody* is working on a backend for #SYCL #Intel provides its own #oneAPI alternative as #oneDPL, which is NOT a drop-in replacement.
Congratulations to Stockfish for reporting their 14th victory at Chessdom's TCEC after a close battle against Leela Chess Zero! Both the engines, like #lichess, are run by a community of #freesoftware enthusiasts: yet another victory for #libre software in the chess world!
Good morning everybody! What are people working on today? Or reading? Or watching? Or hell even thinking about that isn't doom and gloom? :)
At work I'm having a blast building Concourse - https://concourse-ci.org/ meta-pipelines for OpenEdX user retirement workflows. It's been a great education in this rather complex and interesting software ecosystem :)
Later on I want to finish setting up #RetroArch on my #Xbox X. I really love how for $20 you can boot into "Developer Mode" where you get full access to the system. It's not #FLOSS but it's pretty open in a pragmatic kind of way.
I just found out yesterday also that #TIC80 - my favorite "Fantasy Console" runs great there as well. The idea of being able to play my TIC-80 games from the comfort of my couch with the large screen TV and nice controllers? #sweet :)
i remember the first time someone suggested to me straight-out that #opensource#FOSS#FLOSS solved a specific political problem I had been talking about.
it was in a job interview. the person was a grad student. i don't remember what the problem was.
i responded, "how would open source solve that?"
He answered, "I don't know. I thought you might."
needless to say, I didn't get the job. & I could see that the other interviewers thought that question exposed something about my position.
Late slap-dash #introduction:
Sleeper metalhead: no tattoos, visible piercings, spiked bracers, just normcore dressing and at times a dash of makeup. I live by the Seven Fundamental Tenets. #Omnivore, budding chef. Full time bad attitude project manager, part time bitch. Supporter of self-hosted #FLOSS on #RaspberryPi. Metaphorical Belgian, sitting on the fence. You already know my last toot here. Currently on a journey to build #FlashNAS.
I spent last night getting Jellyfin setup accross my devices :D
Time well spent for sure!
Hoping to eventually cut out paid streaming all-together~
I'm starting to notice my top used apps and services are all open source ^^
(Mastodon-Tuba, Matrix-Fluffychat, Streaming-Jellyfin) #floss#linux
Today I received the first payment for the Free and Open Source Software work. It's of course is not a sustainable business yet, but a good step towards.
It's about doing #freelance works as a #FOSS agency and why they, and you as well, don't need proprietary packages when there are #libre alternatives without imposing a risk of development and support lock-in. Answering top audience questions.
I'm a #bi#enby nerd too obsessed with coding for their own good, and a student. Always an ally but eventually realised I was super queer. Turns out I'm also some flavour of enby so starting to work through my feelings around that. Excited for what it means for me even if it's scary (:
I am intrigued by #accessibility and making life better online for no extra cost. #FLOSS software and its communities captivate me, as do the people who talk with me :blobcatheart:
I love to interact with people who share interests or just to satire about the state of things.
Currently, the developer of this wonderful #opensource#keyboard app has no time developing it. This is why I want to highlight, we need to support him with donations to help him get more time to work on the app and bring updates whenever we need it. #foss#floss#fdroid#florisboard
One of the best examples of how damaging and schizophrenic the #WIIFM mindset concerns #freeSoftware and #openSource. One of the strongest reactions against #FLOSS, before it became well-established, was the skepticism about the possibility that people may be giving their work away for free —there must have been a trick somewhere, for it would be unsustainable for software to be given away this way: there would be nothing in it for the developer. Why would they do it?
I'm not going to delve into the quagmire of the motivations for people to write and distribute #FLOSS, but often, especially in the beginning, it was mostly developers scratching their own itch, and then allowing others to benefit from what they had written, not because there was something in it for them, but because there was nothing much to lose in it either. And of course, the more restrictive licenses also provided opportunities for improvements that could be merged back.
Now that #FLOSS is taken for granted, and users don't ask anymore #WIIFY of the developers, but only care about their own #WIIFM, #FLOSS development has become a stressful, negative experience for the authors of projects that reach any amount of success and notoriety, as they get flooded by entitled demands for assistance and feature requests, with no expectation of compensation for the work they would have to put in beyond their own personal interest.
Very cool how adding an editable text label with the :mastodon: logo gets the biggest centralized code hosting site — an abusive one at that, feeding all your code to train a Microsoft-owned AI — loads of free publicity around here. 🤔
Instead, I'm gonna send some love to @Codeberg and @forgejo, since they might actually implement federation for code hosting systems. :blobcatthinksmart:
As in: joining fedi, instead of just paying lip service like that other code hosting site.
In fact you know what? Let's make this thread about cool projects not hosted on Microsoft GitHub.
Any self-hostable repo system instance counts (yes, that includes GitLab in my book) counts.
Respond with a link to a repo and a paragraph-two of a description of the project, and I will boost it (unless for whatever reason I consider the project meh; it's my thread, sorry :flan_tongue: ).
This is the official fediverse account for OmegaT, the free, libre, open source computer aided translation (CAT) tool for professional translators, at its home on FLOSS.social.
Follow for news about the project, and feel free to ask any questions you like!
