What do you see as the pro's and con's of #documentaries? I'm often not a fan, but want to be. My issues with them, and mostly it comes from I love to learn and want docs to be a starting point, not the end:
Credentials of the experts can be spotty
No sources given
No way to ask follow-up questions
Too much theatrics / reenactment
Not as detailed as a book
Often don't cover the topics I want (social science, #religion, #history, etc)
'Can an Army of Feral Cats Help Solve New York City’s Rat Problem?'
"The four locations, all situated between West 160th Street and West 164th Street, comprised a perfect geographical test zone: four cat colonies transplanted directly on top of four rat habitats to contest a real-life game of Tom and Jerry.
@NIH_LLAMAS
I don't know what the impact of many more feral cats would be in NYC. But if your warning is well-placed, the story would parallel one of my favorite #documentaries: the intentional misguided introduction of a species of toad to #Australia to eat sugar beetles. The toad population exploded, but it didn't eat the sugar beetles, in part because the toads were nocturnal and the beetles were diurnal. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0130529/

Top 5 Best Movies About Rock of All Time
Rock movies do more than just showcase music; they bring to life the stories, the personalities, and the culture that define this energetic genre. From biopics of legendary musicians to fictional tales that capture the essence of the rock scene, these films are a window into a world where music...
Loading Docs is a unique initiative that produces short documentaries that move, inspire and challenge audiences locally and internationally, while developing and promoting New Zealand filmmaking talent at home. So far they have been watched by over 17.8 million people....
DAFilms + Taiwan International Documentary Festival are running a collaborative free week-long online screening of eight documentaries from Taiwan's Green Team (1986-1990) guerrilla media collective, which captured massive social movements + government violence throughout their active period. The one about successfully fighting off DuPont is next on my list.
Incredible footage, exactly zero of which I'd seen before.
I'm currently watching documentary Dark Money (2018), about the impact of the Citizens United ruling on US politics and the rise of dark money. If this is a topic that interests you, it's a solid primer on the (complex) subject as well as a well-made documentary.
Currently available free in the US on Kanopy + on other platforms / in a variety of regions.
I watch some great documentaries as part of my job. It just occurred to me, belatedly, that I should mention them on Mastodon for people who might be interested.
"While the Osage are appreciative of Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio bringing the 1920s Terror to the screen, they want the world to know that their story doesn’t end when the movie credits roll.
Former chief Jim Roan Gray, whose great-grandfather’s murder is at the centre of Killers, says the Osage want to be seen as more than victims: they are warriors confronting their US rulers for control of their own land and lives."
Something that I really makes me feel good is listening to #podcasts
And in the spirit of sharing things that I enjoy, here’s a thread 🧵 with my current favourites, complete with notes on topics covered and why I like them.
The list is presented in no particular order (as I personally dislike rankings), but I must admit that my absolute favourite #podcaster is journalist, debunker and “Methodology Queen” Michael Hobbes, who appears to be on Mastodon as @rottenindenmark - anything he (co)hosts is a must listen for me!
Ready for some #AntiCapitalist#Economics? Then the Upstream Podcast is what you need. Hosts Della Duncan and Robert Ramin Raymond lead conversations / interviews with brilliant hosts. They also release quarterly #Documentaries in podcast form. The core idea is that we need to go #Upstream to discover and address root causes rather than treating symptoms of our broken economy. Apart from the contents, I appreciate the care with which sound effects and songs are woven into each episode.
Hello and welcome to my #introduction 👋I am a mid-thirties, late diagnosed #ADHDer, with an #autistic partner. Coming up to my diagnosis 1-year anniversary 🥳 and learning lots every day, having regular “aha” moments. I work PT #burnout in a library and spend my free time trying to coral my unruly curiosity fairly unsuccessfully.
I've been watching Dear Mama, the new Tupac Shakur documentary series directed by Allen Hughes of The Hughes Brothers. It's completely brilliant. Tupac's story is amazing, but the filmmaking is also so strong. The use of music & reworking of the songs to tell the story is so well done. And the perspective rooted firmly within the community that Tupac belongs to is very powerful. No respectability politics, just truth telling. Seek it out.

Barely functioning entropy engine rampaging about like a hyperactive toddler retooting all the Shiny Things.
Do not expect logical consistency or even much sense here. Occasionally I manage to get enough neurons to cooperate so I can post something original.
Current obsessions include #gaming#books#technology#science and catching old #documentaries. No idea why.
