Worth emphasizing this, because most news outlets did not:
“Rep. Matt #Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Thursday ominously invoked Donald #Trump’s call to far-right violent extremists while joining the former president at his criminal trial in New York.
“Standing back and standing by, Mr. President,” Gaetz wrote on social media, along with a photo of himself positioned behind Trump at his trial.”
Ditto.
Today, within 2 minutes of reading the first ten postings, I’ve learned still more about political corruption, crime, death, racism, congressional oath-breaking, famine, #climatecatastrophe, creepy SCOTUS actors, election threats, disease…none of which I can change or affect in any way but all of which affected MY mental state.
The persistent negative slant of social media, bringing all the world’s ills to our door, just can’t be good for us long term. Humans weren’t meant to be exposed to THIS MUCH evil on an hourly basis.
It would take literal generations to recover our fragile democracy, integrity of the rule of law, and honor under NORMAL conditions. Factor in #climatecatastrophe that will decimate our economy for disaster relief, uncontrollable death & forced migration due to famine & unlivable conditions, the collapse of the food chain beginning with marine life, and we’re finished as a civilization.
What exacerbates the situation is intentional genocide fueled by the fossil fuel industries’ and other mega-corporations’ greed, effected by stupid pawns like Trump.
"ChatGPT consumes a lot of energy in the process, up to 25 times more than a Google search. Additionally, a lot of water is also used in cooling for the servers that run all that software. Per conversation of about 20 to 50 queries, half a litre of water evaporates – a small bottle, in other words."
AI is predicted to consume twice as much energy as the whole of France by 2030
Training GPT3, took 1,287 MWh (Megawatt hours) of electricity.
You’re falling for the „Individual CO2 footprint fallacy“ that was invented by big oil to divert attention and responsibility away from them, and shift the blame to us individuals.
From wooden buildings to air filters – how green cities could remove CO2 from the atmosphere
More than a thousand cities around the world now have #NetZero pledges: they want to emit only as much #CO2 into the atmosphere as they can simultaneously recapture.
Technically speaking, urban removals of this most important #GreenhouseGas could add up to one gigatonne (i.e. 1,000 million tonnes) per year by mid-century.
🇧🇷 #Brazil: Among the 497 cities in the state, 414 have been hit. As you read this, there is a chance people are still waiting on roofs for rescue, trapped in houses and buildings surrounded by water. Others are still looking for victims of landslides. Many are without access to clean water, power, or ways of coming and going from their cities, with bridges missing and roads destroyed.

However, in better news, Rishi Sunak's climate policy has been declared unlawful by the High Court this morning (via Adam Bienkov of Byline, see tweet). I'll post the link to the judgment when it surfaces.

State of the climate: 2024 off to a record-warm start
Global temperatures have been exceptionally high over the past three months – at around 1.6C above pre-industrial levels – following the peak of current #ElNiño event at the start of 2024.
The past 10 months have all set new all-time monthly temperature records, though the margin by which new records have been set has fallen from around 0.3C last year to 0.1C over the first three months of 2024.
