#Cyprus: Asylum applications for Syrians have been 'suspended'
This will see #asylum seekers confined to reception camps. According to government sources, "Those who choose to leave those facilities will automatically forfeit any kind of benefit and will not be allowed to work"
This decision is ostensibly due to increased arrivals, with Cyprus having recorded over 2,000 from Jan-Mar this year, compared to 78 in this period last year.
Dear #anthropologists - @anthropology
I'm seeking for help!
I'm doing my #PhD to #socialAnthropology. It is an #ethnographicresearch with #children and #families that are seeking #asylum in Finland.
I want to use #newMaterialist theories, but my supervisor is worried that I wont find anthropological discussions with this theme & theoretical approach.
If you are or you know someone who is an anthro, working with migration issues and using am. theoretical approaches, please let me know!
The colonial biometric legacy at heart of new #EU#asylum system
"On Wednesday (10 April), the EU is set to vote on a new set of asylum and migration reforms. Among the many controversial changes proposed in the new migration pact, one went almost unnoticed — a seemingly innocent reform of the EU's asylum database, #EURODAC.
Although framed as purely technical adjustments, the reality is far more malicious. The changes to EURODAC will massively exacerbate violence against people on the move.
Reform of this 20 year-old database will make it the technological sword of EU's hostile asylum and border policies. It will harness the most nefarious surveillance #technologies that exist to date — namely the capture, processing and analysis of biometric data — and enable EU states to have full control over #migrants' body and movements....."
The dire situation in San Diego County is part of a broken system in which border enforcement funding is prioritized above building necessary infrastructure to humanely process a historic number of asylum seekers #Border#HumanitarianCrisis#Asylum
In a sane world, the Official Opposition party would be making an almighty fuss about this.
But we have #Starmer. I imagine his attitude to the deliberate starvation of vulnerable people will be much the same as it is for pretty much everything else this appalling Tory government does: just quietly nodding along.
At one point in the 68-min long speech, Biden said: “In Nov, my team began serious negotiations w/a #bipartisan group of senators. The result was a bipartisan bill w/the toughest set of border #security reforms we've ever seen.”
That prompted boos & jeers from #Republicans “You don't think so? You don't like that bill? That conservatives got together & said it was a good bill? I'll be darned. That's amazing,” #Biden rebutted.
“That bipartisan bill would hire 1,500 more #security agents & officers, 100 more #immigration judges to help tackle the backlog of 2M cases, 4,300 more #asylum officers, & new policies so they can resolve cases in 6 months instead of 6 yrs. What are you against?”
During those remarks, Senator #JamesLankford of #Oklahoma could be seen saying: “That's true” while nodding his head. As #Biden spoke, [owned] Speaker of the #House Rep #MikeJohnson could be seen shaking his head in disagreement.
Border wall and asylum seekers a few days ago at sunrise, east of Sasabe, Arizona. These people were mostly from Latin America. They were some of the 50 or so people who were delivered through the wall last night by the human smugglers they paid.
Border Patrol picked everyone up fairly quickly on this morning, though sometimes people have to wait all day or overnight to be brought into the station for the first step of their asylum claim processing.
Every day, volunteers from No More Deaths and Tucson Samaritans offer food, water and first aid to people along the road. They also maintain an aid camp west of where this photo was taken.
As I said in the previous post, we need a radical rethinking of the border and immigration. We need to begin a discussion about how to have formally open borders as a means to stability and security.
Two of about 50 asylum-seeking migrants being picked up by Border Patrol a few days ago along the wall east of Sasabe, Arizona. They were part of a large group of Latin Americans.
Further down the road were four young women from Guinea who had flown into Guatemala and then hitchhiked together to the U.S. border where they paid traffickers to get them across.
Such a risky undertaking is not something anyone does lightly.
This is a long discussion, but the more time I spend at the border, the clearer it becomes that most discourse has been totally framed around fascist talking points. I think we need a radical rethinking of the border and immigration that involves a focus on stability and safety over false notions of security. We need to discuss ways that having an open border will make everyone safer and foster regional stability.
It is a complex topic, but we need to start the discussion.
A person’s #immigration journey doesn’t start with their arrival at destination; it’s a long road filled with financial and emotional stress.
Delphina Ngigi, a Kenyan #asylum seeker, died after she waited hours in the cold to get into a shelter space.
The widow and mother of four, whose children are in #Kenya, arrived in #Canada on Thursday of last week and went to the Dundas Shelter at 1 pm on Saturday, but was not admitted until 8 pm. #BlackMastodon#BlackFedi#RIP
#POTUS#Biden is considering executive action that could prevent people who cross illegally into the #UnitedStates from claiming #asylum, several people w/knowledge of the proposal said Wed. The move would suspend longtime guarantees that give anyone who steps onto US soil the right to ask for #SafeHaven.
The WhiteHouse says it is far from a decision on the matter.
The order would put into effect a key policy in a #bipartisan bill that #Republicans thwarted earlier this month, even though it had some of the most significant #border#security restrictions #Congress has contemplated in years.
The bill would have essentially shut down the border to new entrants if more than an average of 5,000 migrants per day tried to cross unlawfully in the course of a week, or more than 8,500 tried to cross in a given day.
Hundreds of asylum seekers have been coming across the border in a remote part of Arizona. When I was last there a couple weeks ago, border patrol was picking people up, bringing them to the station and processing them fairly quickly.
Now, with rain, snow, cold and the serious risk of hypothermia for hundreds of people, Border Patrol has left humanitarian aid to volunteers. The group No More Deaths has been out there day after day for months and months providing life-saving aid to people. Their number is in the press release. If you're looking for a good group to donate to. #Border#Asylum#AsylumSeekers#HumanitarianAid#Immigration
No More Deaths is asking people to call the Border Patrol and demand they allocate adequate resources for asylum seekers.
Border Patrol: 520-748-3000
They have been receiving a lot of calls, apparently! Call and politely tell them that you understand that asylum seekers are being left exposed to snow and cold and you want them to allocate adequate resources instead of leaving it to civilian volunteers.
Andrey Medvedev's lawyer told Reuters that his asylum request was rejected because the Norwegian government did not consider him to have been an official member of the Russian armed forces.
"The overall aid package includes $14 billion for Israel, $60 billion for #Ukraine and $4.83 billion to Indo-Pacific nations. It also has $9.2 billion in humanitarian aid for civilians in Gaza, the West Bank, Ukraine and other nations, as well as $20 billion in US border funds.
"...close loopholes in the asylum process, limit the use of parole for migrants at the border and give the president new authority to effectively shut down the border" #GiftArticle https://wapo.st/492YKDw

"the bill would grant work authorizations to migrants who qualify to enter the #asylum system..
"migrants who seek asylum, which provides protection for people facing persecution in their home countries, would face a tougher and faster process to having their claim evaluated. The standard in initial interviews would be raised, and many would receive those interviews within days of arriving at the #border.
