If voters pass the #border enforcement measure in Nov, it would mark a sharp U-turn for a state that has moderated its approach to immigration since an era when Sheriff #JoeArpaio of Maricopa County carried out #raids & traffic stops that critics criticized as #RacialProfiling. not just critics, his policies were [#cruel & #unconstitutional]

Opponents say the #Arizona ballot measure will do nothing to improve #border #security or prevent #asylum seekers from arriving. Instead, they say, it will replicate the paranoia & turmoil that #Latino & #immigrant communities experienced after Gov #JanBrewer signed #SB1070, a divisive state #immigration-enforcement #law passed by #Republicans in 2010 that came to be known as the “show me your papers law.” That law sparked years of protests & litigation, & has since been partially struck down.

The measure, which needs a majority to pass, is called the Secure the Act. Along w/the provisions, it’d also increase sentences for anyone who sells * that results in an death, & would make it a for workers to provide false info to the screening system.
